About AI Model Evaluation

AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Expert contributors review and compare model outputs, identify errors and uncertainty, and provide carefully reasoned feedback that helps AI systems become more reliable.

This work gives specialists the opportunity to influence cutting-edge AI systems while working remotely with flexible hours. Your physics expertise will help distinguish sound reasoning from unsupported conclusions across technically demanding problems.

  • Remote work with a part-time commitment of less than 20 hours per week
  • Use expert judgment to improve the quality of advanced AI systems
  • Work at the intersection of scientific research and AI development

The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking a Physics Model Evaluation Expert to provide senior-level scientific judgment for training next-generation AI systems. You will assess competing physics reasoning, explain when one approach is stronger and under which assumptions, and produce defensible evaluations for review by fellow physicists.

The work centers on nuanced expert adjudication, calibrated confidence, and the limits of approximations across advanced physics subfields. Prior AI experience is not required.

  • Role type: Part-time contractor
  • Time requirement: Less than 20 hours per week
  • Pay: $80-$160 USD per hour
  • Primary language: English
  • Work eligibility: Available in the countries listed for this opportunity

What You'll Do

You will evaluate technically sophisticated physics arguments and communicate your conclusions clearly to other experts. Your assessments should separate established results from uncertainty, open questions, and claims that depend on specific assumptions or approximation regimes.

  • Adjudicate contested physics arguments, solutions, and interpretations within your active subfield
  • Compare alternative approaches and explain their relative strengths, assumptions, applicable regimes, and breaking points
  • Develop criteria for judging the robustness and validity of technical physics work
  • Identify unresolved questions and distinguish established conclusions from uncertainty or open problems
  • Draft rigorous written evaluations suitable for review by senior physicists
  • Use LaTeX, SymPy, Python, and Jupyter as needed to verify or contrast technical claims

Required Expertise

A PhD in physics with demonstrated expertise and scholarly impact in a defined research subfield is required. The opportunity is tagged as entry level in the source listing, but the substantive role requirements call for senior research experience and advanced scientific judgment.

  • PhD-level physics expertise with scholarly impact in an active subfield
  • Ability to adjudicate competing arguments and explain assumptions, regimes, and approximation limits
  • Current or former senior academic, principal investigator, research group leader, or equivalent research leadership experience
  • Recent representative publications or experience supervising doctoral students or postdoctoral researchers
  • Exceptional written communication and calibrated, well-reasoned judgment
  • Working proficiency with relevant tools such as LaTeX, SymPy, Python, and Jupyter

Relevant Physics Backgrounds

Candidates may bring expertise from one or more of the following areas, provided they can evaluate nuanced technical work within an active research subfield.

  • High-energy physics
  • Mathematical physics
  • Biophysical physics
  • Statistical physics
  • Condensed matter physics
  • Atomic, molecular, and optical physics
  • Quantum optics
  • Gravitation and cosmology
  • Astrophysics
  • Quantum information
  • Optical materials physics
