The Open-Source Software Engineer Role
OpenTrain is seeking an Open-Source Software Engineer to create, solve, review, and validate challenging software-engineering tasks for AI training. You will work across front-end and back-end systems, investigate unfamiliar repositories, debug complex behavior, translate complete coding builds between languages, and evaluate AI-generated patches.
This is a global, fully remote contractor opportunity. The expected commitment is approximately 15 hours per week, with the option to work weekends when needed.

What You'll Do
You will explore and understand unfamiliar software repositories, implement and debug front-end and back-end components, and trace data and execution across interfaces, services, libraries, APIs, databases, and external dependencies.
You will reproduce software issues, identify underlying causes, and implement solutions that fit existing architectures and contribution standards. You will also translate complete coding builds from one programming language into another.
Quality evaluation is a central part of the work. You will write unit, integration, regression, and end-to-end tests, then review AI-generated patches for correctness, completeness, security, and maintainability.

Required Experience and Skills
You should have a public or otherwise verifiable GitHub profile and meaningful ownership of, or contributions to, one or more open-source repositories. Your portfolio must demonstrate substantive authored code rather than only documentation updates, dependency changes, formatting work, or minor corrections.
Strong software-engineering experience is required in front-end, back-end, full-stack, systems, developer tooling, infrastructure, or another substantial technical area. You must be able to understand, modify, and debug unfamiliar codebases and work with multiple programming languages.
- Verifiable GitHub profile or equivalent record of authored code
- Meaningful ownership of or contributions to open-source repositories
- Experience with multiple programming languages
