The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking a Molecular Biology subject-matter expert to support generative AI training. You will design challenging molecular biology problems, author expert-quality ground-truth solutions, and evaluate model outputs for accuracy, rigor, and biological reasoning.

• Pay: $70-$105 per hour
• Schedule: At least 20 hours per week on weekdays
• Location: Remote from the United States
• Engagement: Part-time contractor

What You'll Do

Create domain-relevant tasks that test sequence design and molecular biology reasoning. Develop clear documentation, evaluation standards, and written feedback that distinguish technically sound answers from flawed model outputs.

• Design tasks covering primers for PCR, qPCR, and cloning
• Create problems involving plasmids and expression vectors
• Develop tasks involving gRNA and sgRNA for CRISPR editing
• Design tasks involving mRNA and other RNA constructs
• Create problems involving HDR or repair templates
• Write accurate, well-documented ground-truth solutions
• Review tasks and model outputs for correctness, rigor, and biological reasoning
• Write guidelines and rubrics for sequence design quality
• Evaluate guide and target selection, homology arm length, primer melting temperature, and primer specificity
• Assess codon optimization and regulatory elements

Requirements

This role requires advanced molecular biology expertise and the ability to explain technical design decisions clearly in writing. A PhD is strongly preferred, and practical experience designing constructs before experiments run is essential.

• Advanced degree in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, synthetic biology, bioengineering, or a related life science field
• PhD strongly preferred
• Hands-on experience designing nucleic acid constructs before experiments run
• Experience across several areas including primers, plasmids and vectors, gRNA and sgRNA, mRNA, and HDR or repair templates
• Hands-on experience with Gibson, Golden Gate, Gateway, and restriction cloning strategies
• Experience with codon optimization
• Strong peer-reviewed publication record, weighted toward first-author work
• Publication experience in notable venues such as Nature, Cell, eLife, Nucleic Acids Research, PNAS, or EMBO Journal
• Strong written communication and ability to explain biological design rationale
• Reliability to commit at least 20 hours per week on weekdays
