About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. People with real-world expertise create examples, write strong reference responses, evaluate model outputs, and provide feedback that helps AI systems become more accurate, useful, and aligned with professional standards.

This role applies military and federal reporting expertise to generative AI training. Your work will help models produce clearer, more compliant government communication while exposing you to a rapidly growing area of technology work.

  • Work remotely using a computer and internet connection
  • Choose flexible part-time work that fits around other commitments
  • Help shape how modern AI systems write and evaluate professional documents

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Military Writing and Reporting AI Training Specialist to transform practical military and federal documentation expertise into realistic training examples, evaluation criteria, and detailed model feedback. You will work with authentic reporting structures, terminology, and procedural expectations to improve AI-generated government communication.

This is a U.S.-based contractor opportunity classified as entry level in the project information, although applicants must have at least three years of relevant U.S. Department of Defense experience. The expected time commitment is 20 or more hours per week, and prior AI training experience is not required.

  • Remote contractor opportunity for contributors based in the United States
  • Part-time schedule of 20+ hours per week
  • English-language work
  • Advertised pay: $40–$60 per hour

What You’ll Do

You will create, review, and explain military and federal reporting practices for AI training. The work combines document creation, rubric development, model evaluation, and precise written or verbal feedback.

  • Create realistic military and federal status reports, summaries, and executive updates from prompts and supplied artifacts
  • Develop reference responses that demonstrate effective, compliant, standards-aligned reporting
  • Draft grading rubrics and evaluation guidelines based on military and federal writing practices
  • Review AI-generated reports and provide detailed written and verbal feedback
  • Explain stylistic differences and reporting approaches across WARs, SITREPs, AARs, executive summaries, and related documents
  • Produce decision briefs, memoranda, action officer updates, and other supporting materials when needed
  • Collaborate with other subject matter experts to preserve reporting diversity and branch-specific terminology

Required Qualifications

Applicants should bring demonstrated experience producing military or federal documentation in a U.S. Department of Defense environment. Strong written and verbal communication is essential because the work involves technical and operational subject matter, document evaluation, and precise explanations of reporting standards.

  • At least three years of relevant experience as a U.S. Department of Defense professional, including military service or DoD civilian work
  • Experience producing military or federal reports, status reports, executive summaries, memoranda, or comparable government documents
  • Ability to create, grade, and review military or federal documents, presentations, memoranda, and spreadsheets
  • Ability to develop grading rubrics and evaluate AI-generated reports against federal and military writing standards
  • Familiarity with federal documentation standards and compliance best practices
  • Strong written communication for technical or operational subject matter
  • Ability to provide precise feedback on procedural reporting tasks while working remotely

Helpful Experience

Experience across different military branches, DoD organizations, or functional areas can help you recognize variations in reporting style and terminology. Familiarity with the document types below is valuable, but prior AI training experience is not required.

  • Experience spanning two or more branches of the U.S. military
  • Experience across multiple DoD organizations or functional areas
  • Weekly Activity Reports (WARs)
  • Daily Activity Reports (DARs)
  • Monthly Activity Reports (MARs)
  • Quarterly or annual reports
  • Situation Reports (SITREPs)
  • After Action Reviews (AARs)

Why Join This Project
