The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Military Writing and Reporting AI Training Specialist to help improve AI systems through authentic military and federal documentation. You will translate your U.S. Department of Defense experience into realistic reports, reference responses, grading guidance, and detailed evaluations.

This role is designed for a U.S.-based contractor who understands military and federal reporting structures, terminology, procedural expectations, and documentation standards. Prior AI training experience is not required.

What You'll Do

You will create and assess written materials that show AI systems how effective military and federal communication should be structured. The work combines document creation, evaluation, rubric development, and precise written or verbal feedback.

You may collaborate with other subject matter experts to preserve reporting diversity and branch-specific terminology across the materials used for training and evaluation.

• Create military and federal status reports, summaries, and executive updates from prompts and supplied artifacts
• Develop reference responses that demonstrate effective, compliant, standards-aligned reporting
• Draft grading rubrics and evaluation guidelines based on military and federal writing practices
• Review AI-generated reports and provide detailed written and verbal feedback
• Explain differences among WARs, SITREPs, AARs, executive summaries, and related documents
• Produce decision briefs, memoranda, action officer updates, and other supporting materials as needed
• Collaborate with subject matter experts on branch-specific terminology and reporting approaches

Required Qualifications

Applicants should have at least three years of relevant experience as a U.S. Department of Defense professional, including military service or DoD civilian work. You should be comfortable creating, grading, and reviewing military or federal documents and explaining the reasoning behind your evaluations.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for technical and operational subject matter. Familiarity with federal documentation standards and compliance best practices is important.

• At least three years of relevant U.S. Department of Defense experience producing military or federal reports
• Experience creating status reports, executive summaries, memoranda, or comparable government documents
• Ability to develop grading rubrics and evaluate AI-generated reports against federal and military writing standards
• Familiarity with branch-specific terminology
• Strong written communication for technical or operational subject matter
• Ability to work remotely while providing precise feedback on procedural reporting tasks

Helpful Background

Experience spanning two or more branches of the U.S. military, or multiple DoD organizations and functional areas, can help you contribute varied and realistic reporting perspectives. Familiarity with the document types below is also valuable.
