The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a DoD Staff Writing AI Training Expert to evaluate and improve AI systems that handle federal staff writing. You will create prompts, source artifacts, model-quality responses, and evaluation guidance for operational and administrative documentation.

The role requires at least three years of relevant experience as a U.S. Department of Defense uniformed service member, DoD civilian, or equivalent federal contributor. The opportunity is listed as entry level within AI training because prior experience in the industry is not required, but substantial DoD or federal staff writing experience is essential.

What You'll Do

You will create and assess materials that reflect the formats, terminology, standards, and audiences used by federal organizations. Your work will support both training and testing of AI systems that summarize information and produce staff documentation.

• Develop structured prompts, input artifacts, and golden responses for DoD staff writing tasks.
• Produce authentic Weekly Activity Reports, Situation Reports, executive summaries, performance reports, and related documentation.
• Create grading guidelines for accuracy, tone, compliance, and audience fit.
• Design and review test materials for summarizing and reporting tasks performed by federal personnel.
• Refine prompts, responses, and grading rubrics based on project needs and model performance.
• Recreate weekly, monthly, and ad hoc reporting formats used by federal organizations.

Requirements

This opportunity is intended for professionals who can bring direct DoD or equivalent federal contributor experience to AI evaluation and content creation. Strong judgment and careful attention to standards are important when assessing whether generated writing is accurate, compliant, and appropriate for its intended audience.

• At least three years of relevant U.S. Department of Defense or equivalent federal contributor experience.
• Experience producing Weekly Activity Reports, WARs, Situation Reports, SITREPs, executive summaries, performance reports, or comparable staff documentation.
• Familiarity with DoD terminology, federal compliance expectations, reporting requirements, and organizational workflows.
• Ability to create grading rubrics and assess AI-generated writing for accuracy, tone, compliance, and audience fit.
• Strong written and verbal communication, attention to detail, and audience-appropriate language.
• Analytical judgment and the ability to provide constructive, standards-based feedback.
• Familiarity with PowerPoint briefings, memoranda, Excel summaries, and related documentation processes is helpful.
• Prior AI training or data-labeling experience is not required.
