The Role
OpenTrain AI is recruiting a Mechanical Engineering Technician to contribute to a project designing advanced AI benchmarks. You will create authentic technician workflow tasks, construct technical datasets, and develop detailed grading rubrics that evaluate AI reasoning through real-world mechanical engineering challenges.

What You'll Do
You will translate practical lab, test, and production experience into precise training materials. Your work will involve documenting procedures and diagnostic reasoning clearly enough to support consistent evaluation of AI-generated solutions.
Design and author technician workflow tasks covering test setup, instrumentation, data collection, and failure diagnosis.
Source, synthesize, and construct technical datasets from test logs, calibration records, sensor outputs, and failure reports.
Define accurate solution pathways and develop grading rubrics containing 35 or more items.
Evaluate instrumentation logic, data interpretation, and failure analysis using the grading rubrics.
Document procedures, observations, and diagnostic findings with high precision.
Requirements
This role is intended for someone with substantial practical experience in mechanical engineering technology and related testing workflows. No previous experience working in AI training is required; your technical expertise is the foundation of the work.
At least 4 years of hands-on lab, test, or production experience in mechanical engineering technology
Associate degree or trade credential in mechanical engineering technology or a related field
Extensive experience with instrumentation, sensors, data acquisition systems, and prototype testing workflows
Strong analytical skills for interpreting complex datasets and diagnosing failures
Familiarity with technical documentation formats, including CSVs, spreadsheets, and PDFs
Ability to work independently on remote projects and meet high technical standards
