About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Specialists create, review, and rate examples that help AI systems produce more accurate and useful results.

In this role, your mechanical engineering judgment will help evaluate technical outputs, improve engineering documentation, and validate whether AI-generated work meets professional standards. Prior AI training experience is not required.

  • Apply real-world engineering expertise to cutting-edge AI development
  • Work remotely with flexible, asynchronous collaboration
  • Help shape how AI systems understand mechanical design and validation

The Mechanical Engineering AI Trainer Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Mechanical Engineering AI Training Expert to create and review engineering materials used to train and validate advanced AI systems. You will combine practical mechanical design experience with careful evaluation of AI-generated CAD outputs, technical documentation, and engineering judgments.

The listing is marked entry level, but the role requires at least five years of hands-on mechanical design engineering experience. The work is contractor-based and part time, with an expected commitment of 20 or more hours per week.

  • Create and review engineering materials for AI training
  • Evaluate mechanical design outputs for accuracy, clarity, and technical soundness
  • Provide written and verbal feedback for model training and validation
  • Collaborate asynchronously through remote communication tools

What You’ll Do

You will produce detailed 3D CAD models of simple mechanical components and interpret comprehensive technical drawings. You will also document requirements, specifications, dimensions, tolerances, and manufacturing considerations in structured formats.

The role includes providing insight on conceptual stress analysis and finite element analysis tasks, reviewing CAD outputs and technical documentation, and explaining engineering decisions clearly enough to support AI evaluation and improvement.

  • Build 3D CAD models using SolidWorks, NX, Creo, CATIA, or comparable platforms
  • Interpret technical drawings, critical dimensions, tolerances, and specifications
  • Document component requirements, technical specifications, and manufacturing tolerances
  • Provide input on stress analysis and finite element analysis tasks
  • Review and improve CAD outputs and technical documentation
  • Give clear written and verbal feedback on AI-generated engineering work

Required Qualifications

You should have substantial hands-on mechanical design engineering experience, including practical 3D CAD modeling and finite element analysis. Strong technical communication and close attention to detail are essential for assessing engineering outputs consistently.

You should be able to carry engineering work from requirements through validation and documentation, explain technical judgments clearly, and work effectively in an asynchronous remote environment.

  • At least five years of hands-on mechanical design engineering experience
  • Practical experience with 3D CAD modeling
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, NX, Creo, CATIA, or comparable CAD platforms
  • Ability to work across multiple CAD platforms
  • Ability to produce and interpret comprehensive technical drawings
  • Understanding of dimensions, tolerances, component requirements, and manufacturing considerations
  • Knowledge of stress analysis, FEA principles, and engineering validation
  • Experience defining requirements and completing technical documentation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • High attention to technical detail

What the Selection Process Assesses

The evaluation process will focus on your practical mechanical engineering judgment and your ability to communicate precise technical reasoning. You may be assessed on the areas below.

  • Hands-on mechanical design engineering and 3D CAD modeling ability
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, NX, Creo, CATIA, or multiple CAD platforms
  • Interpretation of technical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and component requirements
  • Understanding of stress analysis, finite element analysis, and engineering validation
  • Ability to produce precise technical documentation
  • Ability to explain engineering judgments clearly in writing and conversation
