About AI training and why it matters
AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Consultants who evaluate model outputs help ensure AI provides accurate, actionable, and defensible recommendations in business contexts.
Contributors annotate, score, and provide written feedback that models learn from.
This work is accessible, remote, and often flexible—while directly influencing how state-of-the-art AI behaves.
The role
OpenTrain is recruiting experienced management consultants to evaluate AI systems on realistic consulting tasks. You will design grading criteria, assess AI-generated or human-created deliverables, and justify scores with clear, evidence-based reasoning.
Default commitment: 40 hours/week; timeRequirement field indicates 20+ hours/week availability is acceptable.
Language: English required; role is worldwide.
What you'll do
You will apply your consulting judgement to create and enforce clear, task-specific standards and to evaluate deliverables consistently and defensibly.
Design precise grading criteria for market analyses, strategy recommendations, financial models, client-ready presentations, and implementation roadmaps.
Evaluate AI-generated or human-created consulting work against established criteria.
Provide detailed written justifications for evaluations and scores.
Apply consistent, evidence-based judgment so assessments are reproducible and defensible.
Incorporate structured feedback from senior reviewers and iterate on submitted evaluations.
Requirements
This role requires professional consulting experience and strong analytical and communication skills. Preserve care and consistency when scoring complex deliverables.
1+ years of professional management consulting experience.
Experience at a leading strategy or management consulting firm (e.g., McKinsey, Bain, BCG) or equivalent consulting background.
Strong command of structured problem-solving, market sizing, financial modeling, and business-case development.
Proven ability to develop executive-level presentations and explain scoring decisions in writing.
Detail-oriented approach and comfort calibrating judgement against established standards.
Prior experience evaluating AI outputs or participating in data labeling projects is a plus (not required).
Compensation & schedule
Pay is hourly and competitive for experienced consultants, and the role is structured as a contract, part-time engagement. Exact hours and ongoing availability are agreed per assignment.
Rate: USD $100–$150 per hour (hourlyRate cap $150).
Default weekly commitment listed as 40 hours; timeAvailability indicated as 20+ hours/week.
Labeling work type: text evaluation with EVALUATION_RATING label type.
How the work typically flows
You will be onboarded to project-specific scoring rubrics and tooling, then complete batches of evaluations with written rationales. Senior reviewers provide calibration feedback to align scoring across evaluators.
Onboarding includes rubric review, sample evaluations, and calibration exercises.
Work independently on assigned batches, submit scores and written justifications, and respond to reviewer feedback.
Iterate on your evaluations based on calibration and quality checks to maintain consistency.
Who should apply
This opportunity is ideal for consultants who enjoy detailed critique, structured evaluation work, and influencing how AI systems perform professional tasks. If you have consulting experience and clear written judgment, you can make a direct impact.
