The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Life Sciences Scientific Reasoning Task Author to create rigorous, non-code benchmark tasks that test advanced biological understanding. You will transform realistic experiments, biological datasets, figures, sequences, structures, scientific text, and research evidence into challenging questions and expert reference answers.

The work emphasizes scientific interpretation, synthesis, and defensible reasoning. It is designed to test whether an AI system can understand complex biological evidence rather than recall isolated facts or write programs.

What You'll Do

You will design novel life sciences problems that require advanced scientific reasoning and present them in a clear, self-contained format. Your work will draw on research scenarios, experimental results, biological data, figures, sequences, structures, and literature-style evidence.

You will also validate the scientific quality of each task, including its claims, calculations, assumptions, conclusions, and possible interpretations. Outputs should be clear and reproducible while incorporating reviewer feedback.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D., postdoctoral experience, or equivalent advanced research experience in the life sciences is required. You should have deep expertise in at least one biological discipline and be comfortable interpreting scientific experiments, data, and research findings.

Strong candidates can translate complex scientific concepts into precise problems with defensible answers. They can also evaluate ambiguity, assumptions, calculations, competing interpretations, and the strength of evidence behind a conclusion.

  • Expertise in at least one area such as molecular biology, genetics and genomics, cell biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, microbiology, immunology, ecology, structural biology, biophysics, developmental biology, cancer biology, or pharmacology
  • Ability to interpret experimental results, biological datasets, figures, sequences, or structures
  • Experience designing rigorous, graduate-level scientific problems with objectively defensible answers
  • Sound judgment when identifying ambiguity, unsupported assumptions, and alternative valid interpretations
  • Ability to write precise expert reference answers
  • Ability to evaluate LLM-generated scientific responses
