About AI Training and Legal Evaluation

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Legal professionals help models improve by creating realistic expert tasks, assessing generated responses, and identifying where an answer lacks accuracy, clarity, usefulness, or sound professional judgment.

This work gives experienced practitioners a direct role in shaping how advanced AI handles complex legal questions, contracts, regulations, and practical recommendations.

  • Create expert examples that help evaluate AI systems
  • Apply professional judgment to model-generated legal responses
  • Identify risks, ambiguities, and gaps in evaluation criteria
  • Contribute to the development of more useful and reliable AI

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Contract Review Attorney to create, review, and improve high-difficulty legal tasks used in AI evaluation. You will apply legal principles to complex issues, assess the accuracy and usefulness of responses, and produce gold-standard solutions that reflect practical attorney work.

The role is suited to an experienced legal professional with strong commercial contract, legal research, and regulatory analysis expertise. Although the structured listing identifies the opportunity as entry level, the role description calls for approximately 5 to 15 years of legal practice experience.

  • Role focus: Commercial Contract Legal Review
  • Engagement: Contract, part time
  • Workload: 20+ hours per week
  • Location: Worldwide
  • Language: English

What You'll Do

You will own the quality of legal content used to assess AI performance. Your work will combine legal analysis, practical advice, careful evaluation, and consistent application of quality standards.

  • Create high-difficulty legal tasks grounded in practical attorney work
  • Write gold-standard solutions for complex legal issues
  • Analyze and apply relevant laws, regulations, and legal principles
  • Review and calibrate contributor work while owning day-to-day quality
  • Assess responses for accuracy, clarity, usefulness, and practical legal judgment
  • Identify risks and translate legal or regulatory requirements into actionable recommendations
  • Escalate genuine edge cases and ambiguities in evaluation criteria

Required Qualifications

This opportunity requires substantial legal experience and the ability to make careful, practical judgments across complex legal and regulatory issues. Candidates should be able to evaluate both the technical accuracy and real-world usefulness of legal work.

  • Approximately 5 to 15 years of legal practice experience, ideally as a Senior Associate, Counsel, or equivalent
  • JD, active bar admission, or equivalent legal qualification and professional license applicable to your region
  • Advanced experience drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and revising commercial contracts, legal agreements, policies, and related documents
  • Strong legal research, analytical reasoning, risk assessment, and practical-advice skills
  • Expert ability to interpret laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance
  • Careful attention to detail and sound professional judgment
  • Ability to evaluate legal responses, calibrate quality, and resolve rubric ambiguities

Helpful Background

Experience working directly in AI evaluation is not required, but familiarity with analytical review workflows can be useful. The role also welcomes equivalent practical experience in place of a bachelor's degree.

  • AI evaluation experience
  • Data annotation or content review experience
  • Quality assurance experience
  • Another analytical role involving detailed review and judgment
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
