About AI Training and Speech Data
AI speech and language systems learn from carefully prepared examples of real human communication. Transcriptionists help create this training data by capturing spoken words, speaker changes, pauses, and other details that enable AI systems to understand natural conversation.
Work on data used to improve speech and language technologies
Apply language expertise to real-world audio rather than only clean studio recordings
Contribute to a fast-growing field with flexible, remote work options
The Role
OpenTrain is seeking an Italian Audio Transcriptionist to produce accurate training data for AI speech and language systems. You will transcribe natural spoken Italian from conversations, interviews, meetings, and other real-world settings, including recordings with overlapping speech, background noise, filled pauses, false starts, rapid dialogue, accents, dialects, and regional variation.
This is an entry-level, fully remote hourly contract with task-based assignments. You will work independently for 20 or more hours per week on a schedule that suits you, with the possibility of continued assignments as additional projects become available.
Employment type: Contractor and part-time
Time requirement: 20+ hours per week
Work arrangement: Fully remote and flexible
Compensation: $15-$35 per hour

What You’ll Do
You will turn challenging spoken Italian recordings into precise, consistently formatted transcription data. Careful judgment is important when audio is unclear, speakers overlap, or natural speech differs from formal written language.
Produce precise, verbatim transcriptions of spoken Italian audio
Capture crosstalk, overlapping speakers, filled pauses, false starts, and other natural speech patterns
Identify and distinguish multiple speakers throughout each recording
Transcribe audio affected by background noise, low recording quality, accents, and dialects
Apply timestamps, speaker labels, and annotation tags according to project guidelines
Follow detailed style and formatting conventions consistently
Flag unclear or inaudible sections using established protocols
Complete assignments independently on your own schedule
Requirements
This role requires strong Italian listening and writing ability, along with the patience to follow detailed transcription instructions. You should be comfortable working with different registers, speaking speeds, regional variations, and informal speech.
Native or near-native Italian fluency across regional variations and speaking speeds
Exceptional listening skills and strong attention to spoken nuance
Strong written Italian spelling, grammar, and punctuation
Ability to transcribe crosstalk, overlapping speakers, filled pauses, and false starts accurately
Comfort handling background noise, accents, dialects, and unclear audio
A consistent, methodical approach to detailed guidelines and formatting
Reliability, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently
Comfort using web-based tools and platforms
Helpful Background
Prior experience is helpful but not required for this entry-level role. Experience in transcription, captioning, subtitling, language services, or related work can help you succeed, especially when combined with familiarity with Italian regional dialects and informal registers.
Transcriptionist, court reporter, stenographer, subtitler, or captioner experience
Post-production editing experience
Background in linguistics, phonetics, language documentation, translation, or localization
Previous data-labeling experience
Familiarity with Italian regional dialects and informal registers
