The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking an Investigative Document Research Reporter to create document-driven articles and summaries from public records, reports, and lengthy source materials. You will turn complex information into accurate, verifiable narratives while following established journalistic structures and avoiding opinion or unsupported claims.

This is a worldwide, remote contractor role offered on a part-time basis. The expected commitment is 20 or more hours per week, with compensation ranging from $40 to $75 per hour.

What You'll Do

You will research and write from provided documents, producing both concise summaries and full-length articles. Your work should make complicated findings accessible while preserving factual accuracy, context, and a clear organizational structure.

You will also document your methods and citation trails so that research can be reviewed, verified, and referenced later. Editorial collaboration is part of the process, including responding to feedback and revising drafts.

• Analyze public records, reports, and extended document sets.
• Identify, synthesize, and clearly explain key findings.
• Write non-opinion articles using the lead and inverted-pyramid structures.
• Produce concise summaries and full-length articles from source materials.
• Participate in editorial review and revise for clarity, structure, and factual consistency.
• Record research methods and citation trails for transparency and future reference.
• Communicate findings clearly in both written and verbal formats.

Required Experience and Skills

The project is identified as entry level, but applicants must have at least four years of reporting or correspondent experience at a recognized media outlet. Candidates should be comfortable handling document-heavy investigations and translating large volumes of material into structured, verifiable narratives.

• Four or more years of reporting or correspondent experience at a recognized media outlet.
• Experience with investigative, business, or science reporting involving public records and document-heavy research.
• Strong source validation, fact-checking, and verifiable reporting skills.
• Ability to synthesize lengthy materials into accurate, structured, non-opinion narratives.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Familiarity with journalistic standards for citations and transparency.
• Experience with public-records research.
• Experience collaborating remotely with editorial or project teams is helpful.
