About AI Training and Benchmark Development

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Experts create, review, and evaluate examples that help modern AI systems reason more accurately, follow instructions, and perform specialized work. Benchmark development is a particularly important part of this process because carefully designed assessments help measure what AI models understand.

  • Work remotely with a flexible, asynchronous schedule
  • Apply advanced engineering knowledge to cutting-edge AI development
  • Help establish gold-standard assessments for evaluating AI capabilities

The Role

OpenTrain AI is recruiting an Engineering Benchmark Question Authoring and Verification Expert to develop high-quality multiple-choice assessment content for an AI research initiative. You will write or review rigorous engineering questions across areas such as VLSI, control science, mechatronics, reactor design, reservoir engineering, and biotechnology.

This contractor role is listed as entry level within AI training, but it requires substantial academic or professional engineering expertise. The work is fully remote and asynchronous, with a pay rate of $61-$77 per hour.

What You'll Do

You will create challenging questions designed to test deep conceptual understanding rather than superficial recall. You may also verify existing questions, improve their quality, and document the changes made.

  • Author original multiple-choice questions in your engineering area of expertise
  • Rate each question as Medium, Hard, or Expert
  • Provide one correct answer and nine plausible but subtly incorrect alternatives
  • Write step-by-step solutions in markdown format
  • Include 1-5 academic references with each question
  • Review questions for accuracy, clarity, completeness, and solvability
  • Edit questions where needed and document verification changes

Requirements

Applicants should have advanced engineering knowledge and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly in written English. A PhD or doctoral candidacy in Engineering or a closely related field is required; a master's degree may be considered when paired with exceptional depth in a specific subdomain.

  • PhD or doctoral candidate in Engineering or a related field
  • Strong command of graduate-level engineering principles and applied mathematics
  • Knowledge of relevant domain-specific engineering standards
  • Experience authoring or reviewing rigorous multiple-choice assessment content
  • Excellent written English and concise technical communication
  • Ability to write step-by-step solutions and rate question difficulty
  • Professional engineering licensure or industry experience is a strong plus

Helpful Background

Experience creating academic assessment content or benchmark datasets will help you succeed. Background in one or more of the listed engineering domains is also valuable, including VLSI, control science, mechatronics, reactor design, reservoir engineering, and biotechnology.

  • Academic assessment development
  • Engineering benchmark or dataset creation
  • Specialized expertise in one or more listed engineering fields
  • Graduate-level engineering research or professional practice

Pay, Schedule, and Work Location

This is a part-time contractor opportunity with fully remote, asynchronous work. The role description specifies an expected commitment of 10 or more hours per week, while the structured opportunity details list a 20-plus-hour weekly time requirement.

  • Pay: $61-$77 per hour
  • Work arrangement: Fully remote
  • Schedule: Asynchronous
  • Employment type: Contractor and part time
  • Availability: Worldwide
  • Primary language: English
