About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Experts create and evaluate examples, questions, and model outputs so AI systems can become more accurate, capable, and reliable.

This remote, flexible industry includes advanced specialist work alongside entry-level projects. Your mathematical expertise can directly support the development of rigorous benchmarks for cutting-edge AI research.

The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking an Applied Mathematics Benchmark Specialist to author and review advanced academic assessment content for an AI research initiative. You will create, verify, and refine rigorous multiple-choice questions that contribute to gold-standard benchmarks for evaluating AI capabilities.

The work focuses on topics including signal processing, financial mathematics, mathematical modeling, and combinatorial optimization. This is an expert-level, part-time contractor opportunity requiring 20 or more hours per week.

  • Pay: $61-$77 per hour
  • Work arrangement: Remote and worldwide
  • Engagement: Part-time contractor
  • Language: English
  • Experience level: Expert

What You'll Do

You will design demanding assessment content that tests deep conceptual understanding rather than surface-level recall. You will also perform verification tasks by carefully reviewing questions written by others and documenting any changes you recommend.

Solutions should make the reasoning clear and rigorous, while question construction should challenge expert-level solvers without sacrificing precision or solvability.

  • Author original, challenging multiple-choice questions.
  • Make every question unambiguous, self-contained, and precisely defined.
  • Include all information needed to solve each problem in its statement.
  • Rate difficulty as Medium, Hard, or Expert.
  • Provide one correct answer and nine plausible but subtly incorrect alternatives.
  • Write step-by-step Chain-of-Thought solutions with clear, concise intermediate steps.
  • Review pre-written questions for clarity, completeness, precision, and solvability.
  • Flag issues and justify edits made during verification.

Requirements

This role is intended for a mathematician or closely related specialist with advanced academic training and the ability to communicate complex ideas precisely in written English. A master's degree may be accepted when paired with exceptional depth in a specific subdomain.

  • PhD or doctoral candidacy in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.
  • Master's degree accepted for candidates with exceptional depth in a specific subdomain.
  • Strong command of graduate-level mathematical concepts.
  • Strong formal proof-writing ability.
  • Excellent written English.
  • Experience writing rigorous academic multiple-choice questions with Chain-of-Thought solutions.
  • Ability to rate questions at Medium, Hard, or Expert difficulty levels.
  • Knowledge of signal processing, financial mathematics, mathematical modeling, or combinatorial optimization.

Helpful Background

Experience designing rigorous academic problems or writing mathematical competition questions is helpful. Familiarity with one or more of the listed applied mathematics domains can support the benchmark-authoring and review work.

  • Academic problem design
  • Mathematical competition writing
  • Signal processing
  • Financial mathematics
  • Mathematical modeling
  • Combinatorial optimization

Why This Work Matters

Modern AI models learn from carefully prepared and reviewed examples. By creating precise mathematical questions and evaluating their quality, you will help produce demanding assessments that reveal how well AI systems understand and solve advanced problems.

AI training work offers remote access to a fast-growing technology field, with flexible opportunities for people who bring specialized expertise.

How to Apply

Create a free OpenTrain account, build your professional profile, and apply through OpenTrain AI. Highlight your academic background, mathematical specialization, experience with rigorous question writing, and availability of 20 or more hours per week.
