The Role
OpenTrain AI is seeking a DoD Staff Writing AI Training Expert to evaluate and improve AI systems that handle federal staff writing. You will create realistic prompts, source artifacts, model-quality responses, and evaluation guidance for operational and administrative documentation.
This is a remote contractor opportunity for individuals based in the United States. The expected time commitment is 20 or more hours per week, and compensation is $40–$60 per hour.

What You'll Do
You will help design and assess materials used to train and test AI systems on DoD and federal staff-writing tasks. The work requires authentic documentation judgment, careful attention to audience and standards, and the ability to explain why a response meets or misses expectations.
Develop structured prompts, input artifacts, and golden responses for DoD staff-writing tasks.
Produce authentic Weekly Activity Reports, Situation Reports, executive summaries, performance reports, and related documentation.
Create grading guidelines for evaluating AI-generated writing for accuracy, tone, compliance, and audience fit.
Design and review test materials for summarizing and reporting tasks performed by federal personnel.
Refine prompts, responses, and grading rubrics based on project needs and model performance.
Recreate weekly, monthly, and ad hoc reporting formats used by federal organizations.
Requirements
This role is designed for someone with substantial experience in DoD or comparable federal staff writing. You should be able to recognize authentic reporting conventions, apply federal compliance expectations, and provide clear, constructive feedback on AI-generated documentation.
At least three years of relevant experience as a U.S. Department of Defense uniformed service member, DoD civilian, or equivalent federal contributor.
Familiarity with DoD terminology, federal compliance expectations, reporting requirements, and organizational workflows.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with careful attention to detail and audience-appropriate language.
Analytical judgment for evaluating AI-generated staff writing and providing constructive, standards-based feedback.
Ability to create grading rubrics and assess writing for accuracy, tone, and compliance.
Helpful Documentation Experience
Experience with common federal documentation processes will help you work across different reporting and briefing formats. You should be comfortable evaluating how information is organized for operational, administrative, and executive audiences.
