About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help skilled freelancers discover specialized projects, build a unified portfolio, and grow a durable career shaping how AI systems learn from real human examples.

Why AI training for accounting professionals

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building modern AI. Accountants who contribute create the examples and judgments that teach models to handle real-world financial tasks.

This work is remote and flexible, makes use of professional accounting judgment, and lets you directly influence how AI systems reason about reporting, close, and GAAP-compliant entries.

The role

We’re recruiting experienced corporate controllership accountants to produce and review structured accounting training data. You will turn real controllership activities—month-end close work, journal entries, reconciliations, fixed-asset schedules, accruals, and related bookkeeping—into high-quality examples that teach AI how to reason about accounting.

The role combines hands-on scenario creation with evaluation: you’ll review AI-generated outputs for accuracy, GAAP compliance, and professional judgment, then provide clear written feedback that improves future model performance.

  • Employment type: Contractor, part-time.
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours per week.
  • Work location: Remote — U.S. candidates only.
  • Language: English fluency required.

What you’ll do

Day-to-day work is asynchronous and independent. Tasks focus on producing realistic accounting examples and evaluating model outputs against professional standards.

  • Build realistic accounting scenarios from controllership and core bookkeeping operations.
  • Review AI-generated accounting outputs for accuracy and GAAP compliance.
  • Evaluate journal entries, reconciliations, financial statement preparation, and period-end close work.
  • Provide clear, written feedback to improve accounting task performance and model judgments.
  • Communicate asynchronously with the OpenTrain team about training-data quality and edge cases.

Required qualifications

Candidates must bring solid hands-on accounting experience and the professional judgment needed to create reliable training examples and review outputs accurately.

  • CPA or equivalent corporate accounting background, or 3–5+ years of corporate, in-house, or firm accounting experience.
  • Hands-on ownership of the general ledger and period-end close.
  • Experience with financial reporting, journal entries, and account reconciliations.
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, or strong Excel skills.
  • Strong written communication, attention to detail, and sound professional judgment.

Helpful (but not required) background

These additional experiences are useful and may help you move faster in the role, but they are not strict requirements unless specified.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Experience with client accounting services, accounts payable, accounts receivable, or payroll.
  • Comfort working independently and communicating asynchronously.

Compensation & logistics

This is a contract, part-time role paying $80 to $120 per hour. You will work remotely and independently; assignments will include creating document-style training examples and evaluating text outputs (evaluation rating and text generation tasks).

  • Pay rate: $80–$120 USD per hour (hourly pay).
  • Data type: Document-based accounting materials and generated text.
  • Labeling tasks include evaluation/rating and text-generation review.

How to apply

If you meet the required qualifications and want to apply your controllership experience to improve AI accounting behavior, create an OpenTrain profile and apply. Applications should highlight relevant controllership experience, tools you’ve used (QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Excel), and examples of period-end ownership.

  • U.S. candidates only; English fluency required.
  • Availability: must be able to commit 20+ hours/week as a contractor.
