Why AI training work matters

AI training — also called data labeling or human feedback work — is the human foundation behind modern AI. Contributors prepare, review, and evaluate examples that teach models to reason, answer, and make scientific judgments.

This kind of work is often 100% remote and flexible, accessible to people with domain knowledge or strong attention to detail, and gives you the chance to shape how state-of-the-art AI systems handle real scientific problems.

The role

You will create high-quality chemistry reasoning datasets used to evaluate and improve large language models on scientific reasoning. The focus is on chemistry-based discovery tasks that draw on experimental or simulated chemical data to test reaction analysis, property inference, parameter estimation, model selection, and predictive reasoning.

You will also produce deterministic solutions, reference explanations, and detailed scoring rubrics so model outputs can be assessed rigorously and reproducibly. Work closely with reviewers and LLM engineers to ensure scientific accuracy and clarity.

What you'll do

  • Design chemistry reasoning scenarios using experimental results, molecular data, and simulated chemical systems.
  • Author multi-step tasks involving reaction analysis, chemical property inference, parameter estimation, and predictive reasoning.
  • Develop evaluation problems focused on pattern discovery, reaction mechanisms, model selection, and scientific consistency checks.
  • Create deterministic solutions, clear reference explanations, and detailed scoring rubrics for reliable model assessment.
  • Collaborate with reviewers and LLM engineers to verify scientific accuracy, clarity, and reproducibility across datasets.

Requirements

  • Strong background in chemistry, chemical research, scientific computing, laboratory analysis, or related analytical work.
  • Applied knowledge of chemical principles, scientific reasoning, quantitative modeling, and data interpretation.
  • Experience with experimental design, reaction mechanisms, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, kinetics, or simulation-based analysis.
  • Ability to document complex scientific concepts, assumptions, and reproducible solutions clearly and consistently.
  • High attention to detail, logical consistency, and commitment to reproducible outcomes.
  • Fluency in English (role language).

Preferred experience

Candidates with 3+ years of hands-on experience in chemistry or a related analytical field are especially well suited. Prior experience creating scientific evaluation tasks, scoring rubrics, or reproducible technical documentation is highly helpful.

Logistics & commitment

This is a remote contractor assignment with an 8-week duration. Expect 20+ hours per week and plan for 4 hours of overlap with Pacific Time (PST). The role is open worldwide and is offered as part-time contractor work.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Duration: 8 weeks
  • Time: 20+ hours/week with 4 hours overlap with PST
  • Data type: Document-based tasks; label types include question answering, evaluation/rating, and text generation
  • Compensation: Not specified in this listing

How to apply

Apply through your OpenTrain profile. If you don't have one, create a free account to apply and manage the project.

When you apply, highlight relevant chemistry experience and include examples of technical writing, reproducible analyses, or past evaluation tasks if available. Clear, concise samples of scientific reasoning or rubric design will strengthen your application.
