About AI Training Work
AI models learn from carefully prepared examples, evaluations, and human feedback. In this role, your engineering judgment will help train and assess models on fluid dynamics reasoning, giving you the opportunity to contribute directly to cutting-edge AI development from anywhere.
Fully remote work using a computer and internet connection
Flexible, asynchronous scheduling suited to independent freelance work
A chance to build a portable portfolio of specialized AI training projects
The Role
OpenTrain AI is recruiting a CFD AI Training Task Designer to create engineering challenges that test AI models on computational fluid dynamics and fluid dynamics reasoning. You will use your OpenFOAM expertise to write compact problem statements, develop deterministic scoring checkers, and provide verified reference solutions.
This is a remote, flexible freelance contractor position requiring 20+ hours per week. The role is listed at an entry-level experience tier, while the work itself requires hands-on OpenFOAM knowledge and a solid technical foundation in fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer.

What You'll Do
You will turn engineering concepts into self-contained tasks that can be answered and evaluated objectively. Each challenge should be physically accurate, clearly written, appropriately difficult, and suitable for automated assessment.
Design compact CFD and aerodynamics tasks that test an AI model's engineering reasoning
Develop deterministic scoring checkers that automatically evaluate a model's final answer
Provide verified reference solutions confirming that each task is solvable and correctly scored
Review and iterate on tasks for physical accuracy, clarity, and appropriate difficulty
Work independently and asynchronously on your own schedule
Required Qualifications
This role is suited to someone who can combine practical CFD experience with strong technical communication. You should be able to explain complex physics concisely and formulate engineering problems that are precise, self-contained, and objectively verifiable.
Hands-on experience with OpenFOAM
Solid foundation in fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer fundamentals
Comfort with mesh generation, turbulence modeling, boundary-condition specification, and post-processing
Ability to formulate precise, self-contained engineering problems for automated scoring
Strong written communication skills for explaining complex physics clearly
Background in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline
Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science degree or higher preferred
Additional Experience That Helps
The following experience is welcome and may help you design a broader range of technically rigorous tasks, but it is not required.
Experience with multiple CFD solvers or multiphysics platforms
Scripting or automation experience with Python, Bash, or MATLAB for simulation setup or post-processing
Exposure to design optimization, flow-control strategies, or adjoint methods
Graduate-level coursework or research in aerodynamics, propulsion, or computational methods
Experience writing technical assessments, exam problems, or engineering challenges
