About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Subject-matter experts create examples, write evaluation tasks, and review model outputs so AI systems can reason more accurately and reliably.
This role brings computational fluid dynamics expertise into that process. You will translate practical engineering judgment into self-contained challenges, scoring methods, and reference solutions that can be used to evaluate AI reasoning.
The Role
OpenTrain AI is recruiting a CFD Engineer AI Task Designer to create engineering challenges involving aerodynamics, boundary conditions, flow physics, and simulation setup. The work is focused on applying your CFD knowledge to AI evaluation rather than writing machine-learning code or conducting reinforcement-learning research.
This is a remote, freelance contractor opportunity designed for independent, asynchronous work. The role is listed as entry level, but it requires specialized, hands-on CFD experience.

Compensation of $80–$110 per hour
Work commitment described as 10–40 hours per week; the structured requirement is 20+ hours per week

What You'll Do
You will design CFD and aerodynamics tasks that test whether an AI model can apply sound engineering reasoning. Each task should be precise, self-contained, physically accurate, and objectively verifiable.
You will also build deterministic checkers and trusted reference solutions, then review and refine tasks for clarity, solvability, scoring accuracy, and appropriate difficulty. Work will be grounded in practical OpenFOAM experience.
Write clear prompts that require practical CFD and aerodynamics reasoning
Develop deterministic checkers that evaluate model answers consistently
Produce verified reference solutions demonstrating that each task is solvable and correctly scored
Review tasks for physical accuracy, clarity, and appropriate difficulty
Work independently and asynchronously
Required Qualifications
You should have hands-on OpenFOAM simulation experience and a strong foundation in fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer. You must be able to explain complex physics clearly in written English and formulate engineering problems with objective grading criteria.
A bachelor's degree or higher in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, fluid mechanics, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
Hands-on experience with OpenFOAM
Strong knowledge of CFD fundamentals, fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer
Practical familiarity with mesh generation, mesh-quality assessment, turbulence modeling, boundary conditions, and post-processing
Ability to create precise, self-contained, objectively gradable engineering problems
Clear written English and the ability to explain complex physics
Self-motivation and reliability when working independently
Helpful Background
Additional experience with CFD, multiphysics, automation, or technical assessment can support your work in this role.
Experience with ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+, SU2, or other CFD and multiphysics platforms
Scripting or automation using Python, Bash, or MATLAB
Exposure to design optimization, flow control, adjoint methods, propulsion, computational research, or technical assessment writing
