About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. OpenTrain AI hires contributors for specialized projects where human expertise helps shape how advanced AI systems understand and respond to real-world problems.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Experts create examples, write prompts, evaluate model responses, and develop reliable scoring methods so AI systems can produce more accurate and useful results.

In this role, your CFD knowledge will help train and evaluate models on engineering reasoning, from selecting boundary conditions to assessing mesh quality and identifying flow regimes.

The Role

OpenTrain AI is hiring a CFD AI Task Designer to create compact, self-contained engineering challenges for AI model training and evaluation. You will develop problem statements, deterministic scoring checkers, and verified reference solutions grounded in real-world OpenFOAM practice.

This is a fully remote, part-time freelance contractor position for contributors located in the United States. The expected time commitment is 20 or more hours per week, with flexible scheduling and task-based assignments.

  • Pay: $80–$110 per hour
  • Work arrangement: Remote, freelance contractor
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours per week
  • Location: United States
  • Language: English
  • Experience level: Entry level

What You'll Do

You will turn practical computational fluid dynamics and aerodynamics concepts into precise, verifiable tasks that reveal how well an AI model can reason about engineering scenarios.

  • Design CFD and aerodynamics tasks that test AI engineering reasoning
  • Write clear, unambiguous problem statements across a range of topics
  • Develop scoring checkers that automatically evaluate a model's final answer
  • Provide trusted reference solutions confirming that each task is solvable
  • Review and iterate on tasks for physical accuracy, clarity, and difficulty
  • Ground task design in real-world OpenFOAM practice
  • Work independently and asynchronously on your own schedule

Required Qualifications

The role requires practical CFD knowledge and the ability to explain complex physical concepts with precision. A background in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline is preferred at the bachelor's degree level or higher.

  • Hands-on experience with OpenFOAM
  • A solid foundation in fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer
  • Comfort with mesh generation, turbulence modeling, boundary-condition specification, and post-processing
  • Ability to formulate precise, self-contained, and verifiable engineering problems
  • Strong written communication skills for explaining complex physics clearly
  • Background in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline; BS or higher preferred

Preferred Experience

Additional experience may help you design a broader range of realistic and technically rigorous tasks, although these qualifications are not required.

  • Experience with multiple CFD solvers or multiphysics platforms
  • Scripting or automation skills using Python, Bash, or MATLAB
  • Exposure to design optimization, flow-control strategies, or adjoint methods
  • Graduate-level coursework in aerodynamics, propulsion, or computational methods
  • Previous experience writing technical assessments or exam problems
  • Interest in how large language models reason about STEM problems

Why Join This Project

This project offers a new way to apply CFD expertise: directly shaping how AI models learn real-world physical reasoning. You will work remotely, set your own schedule, and contribute to meaningful task-based assignments with potential for ongoing work and contract extension.

  • Apply CFD expertise to AI research
  • Work fully remotely with flexible hours
  • Maintain freelance autonomy through task-based assignments
  • Help teach AI models real-world physical reasoning
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension

How It Works

As an OpenTrain AI contractor, you will complete specialized AI training assignments independently and asynchronously. You will create and refine engineering tasks, checkers, and reference solutions while maintaining physical accuracy and clear communication throughout the process.

Creating an OpenTrain account is free and provides a way to build a profile and pursue opportunities in the growing AI training industry.
