About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help experts discover projects, build a professional AI training profile, and apply in minutes. Creating an OpenTrain account is free.

As an OpenTrain contractor, you can turn specialized engineering knowledge into experience helping improve advanced AI systems while building a lasting portfolio of work.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. People with real-world expertise evaluate model outputs, solve challenging problems, and provide clear feedback so AI systems can produce more accurate and useful results.

In this role, your mechanical design knowledge will help models improve their technical reasoning across CAD, engineering drawings, manufacturing considerations, and production design decisions.

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a CAD and Mechanical Design AI Training Expert for work focused on mechanical design and CAD AI training. You will use advanced mechanical design problems and AI-generated technical responses to help models learn from structured human expertise, careful evaluation, and clear written feedback.

This is remote contractor work estimated at about 20 hours per week for 1 to 3 months, with flexible scheduling. The role is listed as entry level, but the required qualifications include at least 5 years of production design experience.

  • Contractor and part-time opportunity
  • Worldwide remote work
  • Estimated commitment of 20+ hours per week
  • Project duration of approximately 1 to 3 months
  • Compensation of $60-$130 per hour
  • Estimated project earnings of $9,600-$20,800 based on the stated schedule and duration

What You'll Do

You will evaluate and solve advanced mechanical design and CAD problems, then review AI-generated technical responses for correctness, accuracy, and engineering quality. The work combines practical production judgment with clear explanations that help refine AI reasoning.

You will collaborate remotely with a distributed team of experts and project participants while documenting feedback and communicating your conclusions in writing and verbally.

  • Evaluate part and assembly design, GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and DFM problems
  • Assess AI-generated technical responses for accuracy and engineering quality
  • Apply engineering judgment to production design scenarios and theoretical questions
  • Analyze problems using tolerance stack-up, ASME Y14.5 GD&T, and design-for-manufacturability and assembly review
  • Contribute mechanical design and CAD expertise to model improvements
  • Document feedback and explain technical conclusions clearly
  • Support AI learning and performance through structured review

Required Qualifications

This position requires strong real-world knowledge of mechanical design and CAD. Prior AI training experience is not required unless stated elsewhere on the job page; subject-matter expertise is the central qualification.

Candidates should have a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace, or Industrial Design, along with substantial production design experience. CSWP or CSWE certification is a plus.

  • At least 5 years of production design experience
  • Expert knowledge of parametric CAD modeling
  • Expert knowledge of GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5
  • Expert knowledge of tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Experience with DFM and drawing release
  • Ability to take designs from concept through detail drawings and production release
  • Professional English proficiency
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Experience

Additional familiarity with manufacturing processes, engineering standards, and professional CAD or product lifecycle systems will strengthen your application.

  • Manufacturing process knowledge covering machining, sheet metal, injection molding, or casting
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 and B89 standards
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, or Inventor
  • Experience with PLM or PDM systems
  • CSWP or CSWE certification
