About AI Training Work

This role focuses on construction, permitting, and compliance workflows — work that helps AI systems evaluate permit applications, site plans, and inspection reports against jurisdictional building codes.

The Role

OpenTrain is hiring Building Code & Permitting Specialists to review, annotate, and validate construction-related documents used to train and evaluate AI systems for permitting and plan review. You will work on document classification and evaluation rating tasks for permit applications, site plans, inspection reports, compliance summaries, and AI-generated permit-review outputs.

This is a remote, contract, part-time role beginning at 5 hours per week and capped at less than 20 hours/week. OpenTrain is the hiring and contracting organization for this position.

What You'll Do

Apply your practical permitting and code knowledge to label documents and judge AI outputs so models learn to apply jurisdictional standards correctly.

• Review and label construction documents, permit applications, plan sets, and inspection reports.
• Identify code requirements, jurisdictional rules, and compliance elements across regions.
• Audit annotated datasets for accuracy against local, state, and national building codes.
• Evaluate AI-generated permit reviews, compliance summaries, and recommendations using structured rating criteria.
• Help define annotation guidance, create onboarding materials, and document edge-case rules.
• Provide structured feedback on variances, mixed-use zoning, complex permitting scenarios, and other edge cases.

Requirements

Candidates must have demonstrable, expert familiarity with building codes and permitting workflows. This role requires deep, practical knowledge you can apply when judging compliance and training model outputs.

• Strong knowledge of building codes and jurisdictional permitting requirements.
• Experience reviewing permits, plan sets, or inspection workflows (permit expediter, architect, government plan examiner, or similar preferred).
• Comfort interpreting ICC resources and jurisdiction-specific regulatory details.
• Ability to judge compliance against local, state, and national code standards and provide structured feedback.
• Familiarity with mixed-use zoning, variances, and other complex permitting scenarios.
• English language fluency required; work and labels will be in English.

Preferred Jurisdictions and Expertise

This project values deep, region-specific knowledge. You must have strong expertise in at least one of the listed jurisdictions and be able to apply local rules when annotating and reviewing documents.

• Preferred jurisdictions: Chula Vista, Tampa, Palm Beach County, Pinellas County, Sunny Isles, Jacksonville, or Surfside.
• Ability to resolve edge cases and cite jurisdiction-specific rules during annotation and QA.

Compensation, Schedule, and Tools

This is a contractor, part-time role with pay set per hour. Tasks are document-based and use classification and evaluation rating label types.

OpenTrain hires globally; you can work from anywhere, but you must bring the specified jurisdictional expertise.

• Pay: USD $65–$90 per hour (hourly rate range provided).
• Time: starts at 5 hours/week, less than 20 hours/week overall.
• Data type: document review and annotation; label types: classification and evaluation/rating.
