About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Experts write, review, and evaluate examples that help AI models produce more accurate, useful, and reliable results.

In this role, your chemistry knowledge will support benchmark development and evaluation. Your assessments will help distinguish genuine scientific reasoning from answers based only on memorization or surface-level pattern matching.

  • Fully remote work that can be completed asynchronously
  • Directly contribute to the development and evaluation of advanced AI systems
  • Flexible freelance work suitable for building a long-term AI training portfolio

The Applied Chemistry Benchmark Specialist Role

As an Applied Chemistry Benchmark Specialist, you will create and verify challenging academic assessment content used to evaluate and advance AI capabilities. The work combines deep subject expertise with careful editorial judgment.

You may work across materials, polymer and electronic chemistry, industrial and process chemistry, energy storage and environmental chemistry, pharmaceutical and agrochemical chemistry, and consumer, food, and specialty chemicals.

  • Engagement type: Freelance contractor and part-time
  • Work arrangement: Fully remote and asynchronous
  • Geographic scope: Worldwide
  • Working language: English
  • Pay: $61 to $77 per hour

What You’ll Do

You will develop rigorous multiple-choice questions and review existing questions for scientific and editorial quality. Each assessment should be self-contained, unambiguous, precisely defined, and capable of testing deep conceptual understanding.

You will also explain the reasoning behind correct answers clearly, using concise intermediate steps so that each solution can be evaluated for accuracy and completeness.

  • Author original, challenging multiple-choice questions in a chemistry specialty
  • Review pre-written questions for accuracy, clarity, completeness, precision, and solvability
  • Rate questions as medium, hard, or expert based on academic difficulty
  • Provide one correct answer and nine plausible alternatives
  • Write clear, step-by-step solutions with concise intermediate reasoning
  • Apply strong reasoning across reaction mechanisms and quantitative analysis

Requirements

This role is listed as entry level within the project structure, but it requires substantial graduate-level chemistry expertise. You should be able to design rigorous academic problems, identify subtle scientific errors, and explain complex technical ideas in excellent written English.

  • PhD or doctoral candidacy in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Strong graduate-level knowledge of chemistry concepts
  • Strong understanding of reaction mechanisms and quantitative analysis
  • Ability to author or verify rigorous academic multiple-choice assessments
  • Exceptional scientific reasoning and attention to technical precision
  • Excellent written English and clear, concise technical communication

Helpful Background

Experience with academic problem design or chemistry olympiad writing is helpful. Exceptional depth in a specific chemistry subdomain may also be considered with a master’s degree.

  • Academic assessment or examination writing
  • Chemistry olympiad question development
  • Deep expertise in a focused chemistry specialty

Work Arrangement and Pay

This is fully remote, asynchronous freelance work available worldwide. The role is part time, with the description calling for at least 10 hours per week and the current work details listing a commitment of 20 or more hours per week.

The pay rate is $61 to $77 per hour. You can complete the work remotely while contributing specialized knowledge to the fast-growing field of AI training.

  • Hourly rate: $61 to $77
  • Minimum stated commitment: 10 or more hours per week
  • Current listed time requirement: 20 or more hours per week
  • Contractor position with part-time availability
  • Worldwide remote eligibility
