About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help freelancers manage AI training work, build a lasting portfolio of annotated projects, and grow into durable freelance careers in a fast-growing industry.

When you work with OpenTrain you join a community shaping how AI models learn from human examples — from writing and reviewing responses to evaluating model outputs using rigorous rubrics.

About AI training work

AI training (also called data labeling or human-feedback work) is the human side of building modern AI. Contributors create, evaluate, and refine examples that teach models how to answer complex questions, follow instructions, and produce safe, accurate outputs.

This role focuses on advanced chemistry content: your work directly influences how models handle technical scientific queries and helps set quality benchmarks for future outputs.

The role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Chemistry AI Training Expert to produce authoritative, well-explained responses to advanced chemistry queries, review model outputs, and create golden-reference answers that become the standard for model behavior. You will document rationale and evidence for judgments and work with annotation leads to refine guidelines.

  • Position type: Part-time contractor, remote, worldwide
  • Typical commitment: Flexible, up to ~20 hours/week over 1–3 months
  • Work focuses on text tasks: writing prompt responses (SFT) and evaluation/rating of model outputs

What you'll do

Your day-to-day work balances high-quality content creation with careful evaluation. Tasks are documented and must follow project rubrics closely so feedback can be used to improve model performance.

  • Write exemplary, evidence-backed chemistry responses that serve as golden references (PROMPT_RESPONSE_WRITING_SFT).
  • Evaluate model outputs against project rubrics and provide clear, evidence-based ratings and explanations (EVALUATION_RATING).
  • Review source materials and compare model answers to authoritative references.
  • Document context and reasoning behind each judgment so annotation leads can refine instructions and training data.
  • Maintain consistency and high scientific accuracy across repeated review tasks.

Requirements

Candidates must bring advanced chemistry expertise plus strong written communication and attention to detail. You will follow detailed instructions and apply rubrics consistently while working independently as a contractor.

  • PhD in Chemistry or a closely related scientific field (required).
  • Proven ability to communicate intricate chemistry concepts with precision.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, or publishing scientific chemistry materials.
  • Familiarity with multiple sub-disciplines of chemistry.
  • Fluency in English and excellent written communication.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and scientific accuracy.
  • Comfort working independently on remote contractor tasks and following detailed project instructions.

Schedule, pay, and logistics

This is a part-time contract role with flexible scheduling. The project is estimated at about 20 hours per week over 1–3 months, with exact hours negotiated per assignment.

Pay is $80–$90 per hour. Based on the estimated schedule and duration, projected earnings are approximately $9,600–$10,800 for the engagement shown on OpenTrain.

  • Payment type: Hourly contractor ($80–$90 USD / hour).
  • Estimated duration: 1–3 months, part-time.
  • Location: Remote — open to applicants worldwide.
  • Data type: Text; labeling tasks include prompt-response writing and evaluation/rating.

How it works and who should apply

Apply through your OpenTrain account and attach relevant evidence of chemistry expertise (publications, teaching experience, or sample technical writing). You will be onboarded with project-specific guidelines and rubrics and will collaborate with annotation leads to calibrate judgments.

This role is ideal for PhD-level chemists who are interested in shaping how AI models handle scientific content, enjoy precise written work, and prefer flexible, remote contractor projects.

  • Prepare to complete calibration tasks before regular reviews begin.
  • Provide clear, well-documented reasoning for every rating to help improve model behavior.
  • A strong OpenTrain profile helps demonstrate your experience and makes it easier to find future AI training opportunities.
