About AI Training Work
AI training is the human work behind modern artificial intelligence. Engineers, evaluators, and other specialists create examples, environments, and feedback that help models learn to reason, use tools, write code, and solve complex problems.
- Contribute directly to the development of advanced AI systems
- Work remotely with flexible project-based opportunities
- Apply specialized software engineering expertise to model evaluation
The Role
OpenTrain is recruiting a Software Engineer to create reinforcement learning environments for next-generation AI model training. You will design environments that test AI models on complex software engineering tasks using Model Context Protocol tools.
The role focuses on reproducible setups, deterministic verification, and golden reference solutions that accurately measure both tool use and engineering ability. The listing identifies the experience level as entry level, although the responsibilities include senior-level software engineering scope.
- Subject matter: AI reinforcement learning environment development
- Employment type: Contractor and part time
- Time requirement: 20+ hours per week
- Languages: English
What You’ll Do
You will build reliable evaluation environments that challenge AI models with realistic programming work. Your output will help measure how effectively models discover information, use tools, and deliver maintainable software solutions.
- Build reinforcement learning environments for bug fixes, feature implementations, code refactoring, and performance optimization.
- Design and implement Model Context Protocol tool interactions that require agents to discover and reason over information from real MCP servers.
- Develop deterministic verification methods and golden reference solutions to evaluate model performance accurately.
- Ensure environments are reproducible and measure both MCP tool proficiency and software engineering ability.
- Collaborate with a remote team while maintaining high-quality output standards.
Required Qualifications
This role is suited to candidates with strong software engineering fundamentals and experience solving complex technical problems. You should be able to communicate clearly, work carefully, and deliver maintainable, scalable solutions.
- Proficiency in C++, Python, Java, Go, TypeScript, or Rust
- Deep understanding of algorithms, data structures, and performance tuning
- Demonstrated experience debugging complex software issues
- Strong background in feature development and codebase refactoring
- Proven ability to optimize software for performance and scalability
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Track record of success in collaborative, cross-functional teams, ideally in remote settings
Helpful Background
The following experience is helpful but is not listed as required. Familiarity with AI systems and large-scale software can help you contribute effectively to model-focused engineering evaluations.
- Experience with large-scale, distributed codebases
- Familiarity with modern AI or machine learning systems
- Background in code reviews and software engineering best practices
Pay and Engagement
The role is paid hourly. The role description lists compensation of $100 to $150 per hour, while the structured pay information lists an hourly range of $80 to $120 and an hourly rate of $120. Apply through OpenTrain to review the applicable engagement details.
- Hourly contract work
- Structured pay information: $80 to $120 per hour
