About This Opportunity
OpenTrain AI is a deeptech AI research lab backed by $10M from top VCs including NEA and General Catalyst. The founding team includes professors, serial entrepreneurs, and AI researchers from Stanford, Harvard, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Research who have built and sold multiple NLP companies.
We are hiring intermediate-level full‑stack or back‑end Python engineers on a part‑time contractor basis to test and evaluate an internal AI coding tool. This is hands-on, technical work focused on real developer workflows and model-assisted coding.
- Role type: Contractor, Part-time (less than 20 hours/week)
- Pay: USD $100 per hour
- Location: Worldwide — fully remote
- Work involves: coding tasks and evaluation/rating of tool outputs using proprietary tooling
About OpenTrain (the platform)
OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. It’s where people start and grow careers teaching AI: discover projects across the industry, build a profile, and apply in minutes.
AI training is a fast-growing way to work in tech: contributors annotate data, evaluate model outputs, and provide human feedback that directly shapes how state-of-the-art systems behave.
About AI Training Work
AI training (data labeling/annotation/human feedback) is the human side of building AI. Projects range from transcribing audio and labeling images to rating model responses and evaluating coding assistants.
Many projects are remote, flexible, and accessible — you can often join with relevant skills rather than formal experience in AI research. Specialist technical roles like this one pay more for demonstrated domain expertise.
The Role
You will test an internal AI coding tool built to assist developers. Work is performed inside the client’s internal proprietary tooling and combines writing or reviewing code with structured evaluation and rating.
Labeling work types for this project are computer programming/coding and evaluation/rating. You will be contracted as a part-time contributor and paid per hour at the stated rate.
- Data type: Computer code / programming
- Label types: COMPUTER_PROGRAMMING_CODING and EVALUATION_RATING
- Labeling software: Internal proprietary tooling provided by the client
What You'll Do
- Use the client’s internal tool to perform coding tasks, prototype snippets, and reproduce developer scenarios for evaluation.
- Assess and rate the tool’s code suggestions, correctness, style, and usefulness using structured evaluation guidelines.
- Report reproducible issues, provide qualitative feedback, and help improve prompts, heuristics, or scoring used by the tool.
- Follow instructions and annotation schemas inside the proprietary platform; maintain accuracy and consistency across tasks.
Requirements
- Solid experience programming in Python (required).
- Practical familiarity with AI coding assistants and tools such as Cursor, Windsurf, and Claude Code (required).
- Experience level: Intermediate — able to read and write code, evaluate suggestions, and provide technical feedback.
- Availability: less than 20 hours per week and able to work remotely on a contractor basis.
- Must be comfortable using proprietary web-based tooling for coding and evaluation tasks.
Who Should Apply & How It Works
This project is a great fit for experienced Python engineers who have used modern AI coding assistants and enjoy hands-on testing and evaluation. Because the work is remote and part‑time, it suits developers seeking flexible contractor engagements.
To apply, create or use your OpenTrain account to submit your profile and relevant experience. OpenTrain lets you discover projects, build a profile, and apply in minutes; final hiring and contracting details will be handled by the client.
- Compensation: $100/hour, paid on an hourly contractor basis.
- Worldwide contributors are welcome; specific contract terms will be provided after selection.
- You will work inside the client’s internal proprietary tooling; no external tooling is required beyond a browser and Python knowledge.
