The Visual Quality Expert Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Visual Quality Expert to assess AI-generated and upscaled image and video outputs at the pixel level. You will use a highly developed visual eye to identify subtle issues that typical viewers may overlook, including compression artifacts, noise, aliasing, grain inconsistencies, and sharpening problems.

This is a part-time contractor opportunity for contributors in the United States. The role requires 20 or more hours per week, with working-hour overlap across the PST to EST window. The pay range is $60 to $90 per hour.

What You Will Do

You will evaluate high-resolution stills and video sequences, document precise visual findings, and help establish consistent standards for judging AI-enhanced media. The work combines detailed visual inspection, guideline development, clear technical communication, and collaboration with other subject matter experts.

  • Evaluate high-resolution video and still images at the pixel level.
  • Identify compression artifacts, noise, aliasing, banding, grain-structure inconsistency, and over- or under-sharpening.
  • Design and refine evaluation templates and rating guidelines, including guidance for edge cases.
  • Translate complex visual details into clear, precise language for data captions and evaluation templates.
  • Generate visual samples for targeted testing and side-by-side comparison.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and program leads to maintain visual consistency across sequences and reviewers.

Required Qualifications

This role is intended for an experienced visual professional with at least five years of professional experience in high-end visual evaluation across film, VFX, animation, or professional photography. You must be able to make precise pixel-level judgments and explain visual differences in exceptional English.

  • 5+ years of professional experience in high-end visual evaluation across film, VFX, animation, or professional photography.
  • Direct professional experience as a VFX Supervisor, Rendering Supervisor, Lighting Supervisor, Lead or Lighting Artist, Colorist, Director of Photography or Cinematographer, Effects or Surfacing Artist, High-End Photographer, Director, or Digital Projectionist.
  • Reliable access to a 4K-resolution monitor or display for precise pixel-level evaluation.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and workflows, including the ability to generate visual samples for testing and comparison.
  • Availability for 20+ hours per week with working-hour overlap across the PST to EST window.
  • Fluent English and exceptional ability to describe complex visual details clearly and precisely.
