About AI Training Work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Contributors create and review examples—annotating interfaces, writing scenarios, and rating model outputs—that shape how models behave.

This work is largely remote and flexible, and it gives UX/UI designers a direct role in shaping product‑facing AI behaviors and prompts used by research teams and product groups.

The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting UK‑based UX/UI Product Designers with front‑end engineering knowledge to support a research project. You will create, review, and evaluate realistic digital product scenarios used to train and evaluate AI systems.

This is a contract, part‑time role open to contributors who can translate end‑to‑end product design thinking into well‑scoped, technically realistic scenarios and evaluation tasks.

What You'll Do

  • Create and evaluate UX/UI product scenarios for web products: e‑commerce, marketplaces, booking flows, onboarding, checkout, customer portals, and internal dashboards.
  • Design realistic user journeys that capture UX intent, edge cases, and technical constraints for model training.
  • Work across experience design, interaction flows, visual interface details, and design‑to‑engineering handoff.
  • Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and data/analytics teams to ensure scenarios are implementable and technically sound.
  • Write clear instructions and evaluation criteria for rating model outputs and generated UX copy or flows.

Requirements

You must be based in the United Kingdom and have the legal right to work in the UK. This is a remote contractor role.

  • Experience designing functional web products (e‑commerce, marketplaces, customer portals, or similar).
  • Proven proficiency with checkout, onboarding, booking, account management, or marketplace flows.
  • Understanding of front‑end engineering constraints, responsive design, and implementation tradeoffs.
  • Experience working closely with product managers, engineers, and data/analytics teams.
  • Portfolio demonstrating end‑to‑end digital product design and design‑to‑engineering handoff.

Helpful Background

Candidates with experience at leading digital product or design studios are a strong fit. Relevant backgrounds help but are not strictly required if your portfolio demonstrates the necessary skills.

  • Familiarity with product design systems, component‑based design, and design handoff tools.
  • Experience at studios such as Publicis Sapient, Red Badger, Valtech, Kin + Carta, ustwo, EPAM Continuum, or similar is a plus.

Schedule, Pay, and Contract

This is a remote contractor role for contributors based in the United Kingdom. The role is listed as part‑time/contractor; the time expectation is 20+ hours per week with a default commitment of 40 hours per week.

Compensation is hourly, USD 150–200 per hour (PAY_PER_HOUR). OpenTrain contracts and pays contributors directly for completed work.

  • Languages: English required.
  • Employment types: Contractor, Part‑time.
  • Work is performed remotely from the UK.

How It Works / How To Apply

To apply, create a free OpenTrain account, complete your profile, and submit your application with a portfolio that highlights end‑to‑end product design work. Applications are reviewed by the OpenTrain team.

If selected, you'll receive onboarding materials describing the scenario formats, evaluation criteria, and any platform tools used to create and rate content.

  • Prepare a portfolio link showcasing relevant web product flows and design handoff examples.
  • Be ready to demonstrate understanding of engineering tradeoffs and responsive design in your submissions.
