The Role

OpenTrain is hiring a Technical Documentation Specialist to create, refine, and evaluate developer and product documentation used as high-quality input for next-generation AI systems. You will work with complex technical concepts and apply professional judgment to make information clear, accurate, well structured, and useful for both technical and business audiences.

This writing-intensive contractor opportunity combines technical communication, documentation quality review, and AI training data creation. The role is worldwide, requires English, and is expected to take 20 or more hours per week. What You'll Do

You will analyze technical source materials, produce structured documentation, and evaluate existing content. The work requires careful synthesis, strong editing judgment, and the ability to explain why documentation choices improve usability and quality.

• Analyze API references, developer guides, release notes, and related technical materials.
• Write and edit guides, tutorials, architecture documents, integration content, and onboarding materials.
• Apply information architecture principles to improve organization, discoverability, ease of use, and scalability.
• Follow docs-as-code practices, editorial guidelines, and style standards across documentation sets.
• Review content for clarity, completeness, and accuracy, then recommend and implement improvements.
• Explain documentation decisions, tradeoffs, and reasoning through concise written narratives.

Requirements

You should bring substantial experience creating developer or product documentation and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to mixed technical and non-technical audiences. Exceptional attention to grammar, terminology, structure, and consistency is essential.

• At least three years of professional developer or product documentation experience.
• Ability to write API references, developer guides, tutorials, or release notes.
• Strong technical writing, information architecture, editing, and documentation strategy skills.
• Practical proficiency with Markdown, Git, CI/CD, and docs-as-code workflows.
• Ability to synthesize complex technical concepts and communicate them clearly.
• Ability to apply Microsoft, Google, or custom style guides.
• Ability to explain documentation tradeoffs and reasoning clearly in writing.

Helpful Background

Experience owning the structure, quality, and strategy of end-to-end documentation sets is valuable. Background with leading universities or highly regarded organizations is also welcomed. Prior AI experience is not required; strong domain knowledge, analytical thinking, and precise written communication are central to the role.
