  • Apply practical engineering judgment to model evaluation
  • Use flexible remote work to fit projects around your schedule

The Role

OpenTrain AI is recruiting a Software Engineering RL Environment Contributor to create high-quality training data for reinforcement learning systems. You will design reproducible environments that test models on realistic software engineering challenges, including defect resolution, feature development, refactoring, and performance improvement.

The role combines hands-on software development with detailed documentation and technical review. You will help establish clear, dependable examples that allow AI systems to learn from strong engineering practices and sound technical reasoning.

  • Employment type: part-time contractor
  • Time requirement: less than 20 hours per week
  • Experience level listed for the role: entry level
  • Language: English
  • Work location: worldwide

What You’ll Do

  • Create reproducible environments for complex software engineering problems.
  • Develop golden reference solutions that define the expected outcome for each task.
  • Contribute code samples, debugging strategies, and development insights across Python, Java, Rust, Go, C++, and TypeScript.
  • Analyze defects and performance bottlenecks in diverse codebases.
  • Implement maintainable features and modernize legacy code through refactoring and optimization.
  • Document technical reasoning, solution approaches, and code decisions for AI training data quality.
  • Review and validate peer-contributed code and technical submissions for accuracy and clarity.

Required Skills and Qualifications

You must have significant hands-on expertise in at least one of Python, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript. Strong judgment in algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles is essential, along with the ability to debug complex systems, resolve defects, and optimize performance.

Experience refactoring large codebases or modernizing legacy systems is valuable. Clear technical documentation and communication skills are required, as is a verifiable open-source contribution history through a GitHub or GitLab profile.

  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one listed programming language
  • Ability to design reproducible environments and reference solutions for coding problems
  • Strong debugging, algorithm, and data-structure judgment
  • Experience refactoring large codebases and optimizing performance
  • Ability to document technical reasoning and review code for accuracy
  • Verifiable open-source contributions on GitHub or GitLab

Helpful Background

Experience delivering substantial features from conception through completion in cross-functional projects is helpful. Curiosity about AI and its technical challenges is welcome, but previous AI experience is not required.

  • Experience taking substantial software features from idea to completion
  • Background working on cross-functional projects
  • Interest in how AI systems learn technical tasks
