About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help contractors discover projects, build a unified portfolio of AI training work, and grow a durable freelance career in a fast-growing industry.

OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role. We centralize opportunities and let contributors show credible experience across projects without rebuilding proof of work on every platform.

About AI training and document workflows

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human work that teaches models to understand documents, text, and structured data. Contributors annotate, review, and evaluate model outputs so AI systems improve over time.

This role focuses on Document Workflow Engineering: designing and maintaining document processing, review pipelines, and structured feedback so models learn from expert human judgments and clear explanations.

The role — what you'll do

As a Software Engineer on Human Data Platforms you will build and maintain APIs, document workflows, and data pipelines that connect expert reviewers, model outputs, and quality-control systems.

You will also produce or improve expert responses, review source materials and model outputs against project guidelines, and document clear explanations so feedback is actionable for model improvements.

  • Write or improve expert responses and explain reasoning clearly for model training.
  • Review source materials and model outputs against detailed project rubrics.
  • Provide clear, reproducible judgments so feedback can be consumed by downstream systems.
  • Maintain consistency and quality across repeated review tasks and pipeline runs.

Technical responsibilities

This role blends hands-on engineering with an understanding of human review workflows. You will write code, integrate services, and help operationalize secure document pipelines for annotation and evaluation work.

  • Design and implement APIs and async systems to connect reviewers, annotation tools, and data stores.
  • Develop and maintain data models and SQL queries for auditability and reporting.
  • Work with front-end code (React) to improve reviewer interfaces and productivity.
  • Integrate OCR/document-processing and search components into end-to-end workflows.
  • Ensure secure handling of sensitive data across pipelines and cloud environments.

Required qualifications

We are seeking candidates with practical experience in Document Workflow Engineering and strong software skills; prior AI training experience is not required unless stated elsewhere on the job page.

  • Relevant professional, academic, or language expertise in Document Workflow Engineering.
  • Strong Python and React experience.
  • Familiarity with APIs, SQL, async systems, and data modeling.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Background in OCR, document processing, or search systems.
  • Experience with secure data handling and building complex pipelines.
  • Fluency in English, strong written communication, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow detailed project instructions and apply rubrics consistently.
  • Comfort working independently as a remote contractor.

Schedule, pay, and employment type

This is a part-time contractor role requiring at least 20+ hours per week and at least 6–8 hours of overlap with Pacific Time (PST). The role is open worldwide; English fluency is required.

Pay is $50–$70 per hour with an expected approximate project earning range of $8,000–$11,200 based on the schedule and duration shown on OpenTrain.

  • Employment types: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Data type: Document; label types: Evaluation Rating and Text Generation.

Who should apply and next steps

Apply if you have real-world experience building document pipelines, strong full-stack engineering skills, and an interest in shaping how AI systems learn from human feedback. Entry-level applicants are welcome if you can demonstrate the required technical skills and domain knowledge.

To apply, build or update your OpenTrain profile to reflect your document workflow experience and relevant technical skills. OpenTrain will manage contracting and give you a place to grow your AI training portfolio.

  • Worldwide applicants accepted; English required.
  • Role level: Entry level (practical technical skills required).
