About OpenTrain
OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help freelancers find projects, consolidate proof-of-work, and grow a durable portfolio focused on human-in-the-loop AI work.
About AI training work
AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building modern AI. Contributors annotate data, evaluate model outputs, and build workflows that teach models how to behave — work that is increasingly remote, flexible, and foundational to every major AI system.
- Great for flexible, remote work and building a visible portfolio of AI experience.
- Projects range from simple annotation to building sophisticated evaluation and document workflows.
The role
OpenTrain is recruiting a Software Engineer focused on Human Data Platforms: systems that support model evaluation, secure document handling, and document-centric workflows. This is a remote, part-time contractor role with significant ownership and autonomy. The listing indicates entry-level, but the role seeks a hands-on builder who can move across backend and frontend systems.
- Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
- Time requirement: 20+ hours/week.
- Pay: $50 to $70 per hour (USD).
- Languages: English; worldwide applicants accepted.
What you'll do
- Ship features across Python/FastAPI backends and React/Next.js + TypeScript frontends.
- Design and implement data pipelines for evaluation and model control layers.
- Own secure document pipelines across cloud storage with permissions and leakage safeguards.
- Develop OCR and search systems for PDFs, images, and scanned documents.
- Parse and enforce complex nested JSON schemas for ingestion and validation.
- Build tools to generate, edit, and annotate PDFs and images.
- Debug, scale, and improve pipeline and storage performance, reliability, and system design.
Requirements
You must be comfortable contributing across the full stack and taking ownership of production systems.
- Strong Python and React experience.
- Comfort working across backend and frontend stacks.
- Solid fundamentals in APIs, SQL, async systems, and data modeling.
- Cloud experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Ability to work with complex data systems or pipelines.
- High ownership, low ego, and fast execution.
Helpful background
- Experience with LLMs or other AI systems.
- Experience in OCR, document processing, or search systems.
- Familiarity with secure data handling, permissions, and preventing data leakage.
- Track record of building and shipping production systems.
Pay, logistics, and next steps
This contractor role pays between $50 and $70 per hour (USD) for 20+ hours/week and is open to applicants worldwide. You will work remotely and collaborate cross-functionally to build secure document and evaluation pipelines.
To apply, create or update your OpenTrain profile so your relevant experience and portfolio are visible. Submit your application through OpenTrain with examples of past systems you built (code, architecture notes, or short summaries).
- Payment type: Hourly contractor rates ($50–$70/hr).
- Work arrangement: Remote, part-time, contractor.
