Why AI training work matters
AI training is the human side of modern model development: people annotate, review, and rate examples that teach models to act correctly. This project centers on engineering QA and CAD model review—skills that directly improve how design-focused AI systems understand and produce technical content.
Most OpenTrain projects are remote and flexible. Contributors often combine this work with other freelance or part-time commitments while building a portfolio of domain expertise.
Work is 100% remote and typically flexible around your schedule.
Opportunities range from entry-level tasks to specialist engineering work that pays more for domain experience.
The role
OpenTrain AI is hiring a Senior FreeCAD Engineer on a contract, part-time basis to support AI training tasks focused on parametric CAD modeling, mechanical assemblies, technical drawings, and engineering quality assurance.
You will build, review, and validate FreeCAD models and drawings, apply GD&T and DFM principles, and provide clear evaluation ratings and feedback to improve model accuracy and manufacturability. Python scripting for CAD automation is a strong advantage for streamlining repeatable tasks.
Work location: Remote, worldwide (English required).
Data/task type: Document review and evaluation ratings for CAD deliverables.
What you'll do
This is a hands-on engineering and review role. Tasks will combine model creation with structured evaluation and feedback intended to train AI systems and validate engineering outputs.
Build, modify, and validate parametric CAD models in FreeCAD.
Develop mechanical assemblies with proper component integration and constraints.
Apply GD&T and DFM principles to support manufacturability and quality.
Produce production-ready technical drawings and documentation for downstream use.
Review CAD models and drawings, identify issues, and document evaluation ratings.
Use Python scripting to automate or enhance repetitive CAD workflows when needed.
Requirements
Candidates must meet the core technical requirements below. All stated qualifications come from the project brief.
2+ years in mechanical engineering, product design, industrial engineering, or a related field with parametric CAD experience.
Advanced proficiency in FreeCAD or a comparable parametric CAD platform.
Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, GD&T, and DFM best practices.
Experience creating production-ready technical drawings and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
Experience conducting engineering QA and verifying model integrity against specifications.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written communication skills for remote collaboration.
Helpful background (nice to have)
These skills are not strictly required but will make you more competitive for the project and help you work more efficiently on engineering-focused AI training tasks.
Python scripting experience for CAD automation and parametric model generation.
Experience building robust, reusable parametric models and libraries.
Familiarity with industry production procedures and manufacturing constraints.
How the project works & how to apply
If you join, you'll be assigned tasks that include creating or reviewing FreeCAD files, filling evaluation-rating forms, and providing clear notes to help improve model intent and manufacturability. Work is tracked through OpenTrain AI and paid hourly at the advertised rate range.
Apply with a profile that highlights your FreeCAD work, examples of technical drawings or assemblies, and any Python scripting samples for CAD automation. OpenTrain will match qualified candidates to tasks and projects that fit their skills and availability.
Prepare examples of parametric models, GD&T-applied drawings, and assembly files when applying.
Be ready to perform sample evaluations or short test tasks to demonstrate modeling and QA skills.
