About this role
OpenTrain is recruiting a Senior Book Editor to review and improve book manuscripts as part of an AI training project focused on high-quality editorial judgment. You will assess clarity, narrative structure, voice, plot, character development, thematic continuity, and market alignment, then translate that expertise into precise feedback and editorial standards. The role combines advanced manuscript editing with quality review of AI-generated editorial work and is well suited to an accomplished editor who understands what distinguishes polished, publishable writing. This is a remote contractor opportunity. US-based contributors are preferred, though qualified professionals in other locations may also be considered.

What you will do
Review, analyze, and enhance book manuscripts across relevant editorial dimensions. Perform developmental, substantive, line, and copyediting, including content restructuring when needed. Identify inconsistencies, narrative gaps, and opportunities to strengthen plot, character development, and thematic continuity. Draft and refine constructive, actionable editorial commentary. Help develop editorial guidelines and best practices for AI model development. Review AI-generated editorial work for accuracy, style, and alignment with high industry standards. Communicate edits and recommendations clearly in written and verbal discussions.

Required skills
You should have extensive experience editing published books for recognized publishing houses or prominent authors. Exceptional command of English grammar, literary style, and editorial judgment is required, along with the ability to provide incisive, nuanced feedback across genres and formats. Demonstrated strength in manuscript analysis, line editing, copyediting, and content restructuring is important. Strong written and verbal collaboration skills and comfort working remotely in a technology-enabled environment are also expected.

Helpful background
Editorial leadership on New York Times bestsellers, award-winning books, or other notably recognized titles is especially valuable. Experience balancing narrative quality, authorial voice, and market alignment will help you contribute effectively to this editorial AI training work.

Pay
The listed pay range is $80‑$120 per hour.
