About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help technical contributors find specialized AI training work, build a unified portfolio, and grow a durable freelance career in a fast-expanding industry.

OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role. Creating an OpenTrain account is free and is how you apply, manage work, and get paid.

About AI training work

AI training (data labeling / human feedback) is the human side of building modern models. Contributors annotate, generate, and rate examples the models learn from — directly shaping how systems understand technical topics.

This work is typically 100% remote, flexible, and well suited to part-time schedules. Projects often require clear technical communication and careful attention to accuracy.

  • Remote, flexible, often part-time work that fits around other commitments
  • Work directly influences how state-of-the-art AI explains and reasons about engineering topics

The role

We are recruiting a Semiconductor Devices & Microelectronics Expert to support AI training tasks focused on semiconductor technologies, microfabrication, and device physics. You will produce technical text, rate model outputs, and provide structured feedback to improve dataset quality.

This is a contractor, part-time role (20+ hours/week) that uses TEXT_GENERATION and EVALUATION_RATING tasks. Work is asynchronous and conducted in English; contributors worldwide may apply.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours per week
  • Labeling tasks: Text generation and evaluation/rating
  • Language: English (required); open to applicants worldwide

What you'll do

Your core deliverables will combine domain review with clear technical writing and structured annotations to help train and evaluate generative AI systems.

  • Analyze semiconductor device physics, operational principles, and recent advances
  • Evaluate microfabrication techniques, process integration, and yield optimization
  • Assess device scaling, performance modeling, and reliability methodologies
  • Review materials used in electronic and semiconducting device fabrication
  • Produce written explanations and verbal clarifications of complex engineering concepts for AI model training
  • Deliver structured feedback on project data for technical accuracy and completeness
  • Collaborate asynchronously with project coordinators and other domain experts

Requirements

Candidates must bring deep technical knowledge and the ability to explain complex engineering concepts clearly in writing and speech.

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline (required)
  • Extensive experience in semiconductor device design, fabrication processes, and microelectronics engineering
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor physics, device modeling, and reliability testing
  • Hands-on exposure to modern microfabrication and process integration techniques
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Clear written and verbal communication for technical explanations
  • Prior technical publications, patents, or collaborative R&D experience is a plus

Who should apply

This listing is classified as entry level in our system, but the role expects advanced technical training and hands-on exposure. Early-career researchers, engineers, or experienced technicians with relevant graduate training and microfabrication experience are encouraged to apply.

If you can read, evaluate, and generate precise technical explanations about device physics and fabrication, and you enjoy improving model outputs through structured feedback, this role is a strong match.

  • Suitable for candidates with advanced academic credentials plus practical microelectronics experience
  • Good fit for contributors who prefer asynchronous, detail-oriented work

Compensation & time commitment

OpenTrain AI pays contractors by the hour for this role. The project offers a competitive hourly range and is structured to support part-time contributions.

  • Pay: $66–$130 per hour (hourly rate range provided by the project)
  • Typical advertised hourly rate: $130/hr (see project posting for exact rate offered)
  • Minimum time expectation: 20+ hours per week
  • Contractor status: paid per hour through OpenTrain

How it works

Apply through your OpenTrain account (free to create). If selected you will receive project instructions, deliverable formats, and an overview of review criteria.

Work is asynchronous: you will generate or rate text examples, provide structured correctness feedback, and may record brief verbal clarifications when requested. Collaboration with coordinators and peer reviewers is conducted through the platform.

  • Tasks are completed remotely and submitted through OpenTrain
  • You will be asked to follow technical guidelines and deliver clear written explanations and structured ratings
  • Payments are processed per the project terms once work is approved
