About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Specialists write examples, evaluate model responses, identify errors, and provide expert feedback so AI systems can produce more accurate, useful, safe, and technically sound results.
Remote work that can fit around other commitments
Directly influence how advanced AI models reason and respond
Apply specialized technical knowledge to cutting-edge systems
The Role
OpenTrain AI is hiring Scala AI Training Engineers for remote, hourly contractor work. You will work with AI-generated Scala code, system designs, and technical explanations, creating high-quality reference material and evaluating model outputs for correctness, clarity, safety, performance, and adherence to the prompt.
This intermediate-level role requires at least 20 hours per week. Compensation is $70 USD per hour. The role is available to contractors in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, Cambodia, Germany, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines, the United States, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
Employment type: Part-time contractor
Work arrangement: Remote
Time commitment: 20+ hours per week
Pay: $70 USD per hour
Working language: English, with minimum C1 proficiency
What You’ll Do
You will combine hands-on Scala engineering judgment with structured AI evaluation. Your feedback will help distinguish robust solutions from responses that contain subtle correctness, performance, safety, or reasoning problems.
Review AI-generated Scala code, system designs, and technical explanations
Write reference implementations and model answers for Scala and JVM topics
Create detailed prompts and quality explanations that guide model learning
Compare and rank AI responses for correctness, safety, performance, and reasoning quality
Check for bugs and weak spots in concurrency, distributed-systems behavior, JVM performance, and resource handling
Fact-check technical information and identify inaccuracies or unsafe patterns
Evaluate outputs for bias across real-world use cases
Required Qualifications
This role is intended for an experienced Scala professional who can explain complex engineering decisions clearly in written English. You should be comfortable assessing both implementation details and broader system behavior.
Strong professional production experience with Scala 2.13+ or Scala 3
Deep JVM fundamentals, including the memory model, garbage collection, profiling, and performance tuning
Experience with concurrency and effect systems or actor-based systems such as cats-effect, ZIO, Akka, or Pekko
Distributed-systems experience with microservices, messaging, retries, idempotency, backpressure, and consistency tradeoffs
Strong testing practices, including unit, integration, and property-based testing
Comfort with sbt, Maven or Gradle interoperability, and version-control best practices
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience
Minimum C1 English proficiency and the ability to write clear technical explanations
Helpful Experience
Prior experience in AI training, data annotation, or evaluating AI-generated technical content is a strong plus. Familiarity with the evaluation and feedback process can help you quickly translate your engineering expertise into high-quality training data.
Scala 2.13+ or Scala 3 production experience
JVM profiling, garbage collection, and performance tuning
Concurrency using Akka, Pekko, cats-effect, or ZIO
Distributed-systems design involving retries and backpressure
Clear written technical explanations in C1 English
AI evaluation or technical data-training experience
