The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking a Public Interest Legal AI Evaluation Expert to create evaluation tasks for AI systems used in civil rights, environmental, and public advocacy contexts. You will translate senior public interest legal judgment into realistic scenarios, reference work products, and scoring rubrics.

The work spans United States and international standards, including federal civil rights statutes, NEPA, environmental statutes, international human rights law, and EU environmental directives. The engagement is worldwide, conducted in English, and available on a part-time contractor basis for 20 or more hours per week.

What You’ll Do

You will design substantive document-based evaluation tasks that reflect the complexity of real public interest legal practice. Assignments should test applied judgment, strategic reasoning, regulatory understanding, and the ability to produce credible legal work products.

• Construct scenarios involving civil rights litigation, environmental compliance and enforcement, community advocacy, and policy reform
• Build tasks across constitutional law, environmental regulation, housing and consumer protection, immigration and asylum, and government accountability
• Develop scenarios involving legal research platforms, nonprofit case management systems, and regulatory filing systems such as EPA dockets
• Apply constitutional analysis, regulatory compliance review, and impact litigation strategy
• Produce reference legal briefs, regulatory comments, and advocacy memoranda
• Author rubrics that distinguish authentic public interest legal judgment from generic law school or bar exam recall

Required Qualifications

This role requires substantial hands-on experience in public interest legal practice. You should be able to draw on direct responsibility for litigation, regulatory advocacy, or policy reform and convert that experience into realistic evaluation criteria.

• At least five years of experience as a public interest attorney in legal aid, advocacy, nonprofit, or government settings
• Direct ownership or leadership of impact litigation, regulatory advocacy, or policy reform initiatives
• Strong practical understanding of constitutional analysis, regulatory processes, legislative advocacy, and public interest legal tools
• Ability to produce realistic legal briefs, regulatory comments, advocacy memoranda, and judgment-based evaluation rubrics
• A JD with bar admission or an international equivalent is strongly preferred
