The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting a PHP Backend AI Training Engineer to review AI-generated PHP code, backend designs, and technical explanations. You will create reference implementations, assess model answers, and provide detailed reasoning that helps improve AI performance on real-world backend engineering problems.

The work covers application architecture, API design, data modeling, caching, database usage, secure backend practices, and adherence to technical prompts.

What You'll Do

You will compare and assess AI responses using structured evaluation criteria, then produce technically sound examples and explanations that demonstrate strong PHP backend practices.

• Review AI-generated PHP code, backend designs, and technical explanations for accuracy and quality.
• Write reference implementations and model answers using strong PHP and backend best practices.
• Evaluate responses for security, performance, clarity, and adherence to the prompt.
• Compare multiple AI responses and provide structured feedback on correctness and reasoning quality.
• Identify issues in architecture, data modeling, API design, caching, and database usage.

Required Skills

You should have expert-level PHP backend development experience in production systems and a methodical approach to evaluating complex engineering problems. Clear technical writing in English is required.

• Strong PHP 7.4/8.x backend development experience, including OOP, strict typing, namespaces, and Composer.
• Experience with at least one major PHP framework, such as Laravel or Symfony.
• Strong knowledge of REST, authentication and authorization, caching, queues, database optimization, and secure coding practices.
• Experience reviewing code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
• Comfort with version control, CI/CD workflows, and automated testing.
• Ability to design REST APIs, caching systems, queues, and database optimizations in PHP.
• Ability to write clear technical explanations in English.

Helpful Background

Prior experience with AI data training, annotation, or evaluating AI-generated technical content is a strong plus. You may also benefit from experience with database design, testing, and secure software engineering practices.

• Experience with MySQL or PostgreSQL schema design, indexing, query optimization, and transactions.
• Familiarity with the OWASP Top 10.
• Experience with PHPUnit and integration tests.
• Familiarity with observability practices.
• Prior exposure to AI data training or evaluation of AI-generated technical content.
