OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. It connects skilled contributors with projects that help shape how modern AI systems learn, while providing a place to build a lasting professional profile.

As an OpenTrain contractor, you can discover specialized work, showcase your experience, and grow a portfolio in a rapidly developing technology industry.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Experts create, review, and evaluate structured examples so AI systems can better understand technical information and produce useful results.

This role focuses on mechanical CAD data. Your models, reviews, and documentation will help prepare high-quality training material for AI systems working with engineering design.

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Parametric Mechanical CAD Modeler to create, revise, and assess structured 3D CAD models for AI training. You will translate written design briefs into robust parametric parts and assemblies while preserving design intent through feature trees and constraints.

The work combines mechanical design judgment with careful evaluation of dimensional accuracy, tolerance application, production readiness, and manufacturability across multiple manufacturing processes. This is a worldwide, part-time contractor opportunity requiring 20 or more hours per week.

  • Engagement: Contractor and part-time
  • Availability: 20+ hours per week
  • Location: Worldwide and fully remote
  • Pay: $40–$100 USD per hour

What You'll Do

You will create and review CAD data that accurately reflects written technical requirements and clear mechanical design intent. You will also communicate modeling decisions and revisions through thorough documentation and verbal updates.

  • Create fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies from written briefs.
  • Edit existing parametric models to meet new technical requirements and document all changes.
  • Build robust feature trees and constraints that preserve design intent.
  • Review models for dimensional accuracy, tolerance application, manufacturability, and production readiness.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing principles to injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting or forging.
  • Translate design intent into clear, structured CAD data suitable for AI model training.
  • Communicate technical decisions and model updates through detailed written reports and verbal updates.

Required Qualifications

This role requires substantial hands-on mechanical CAD experience and advanced assembly-modeling capability. Although the structured listing identifies the opportunity as entry level, the stated technical requirements include at least four years of parametric CAD experience and at least ten years of experience creating complex assemblies.

  • At least four years of hands-on parametric CAD experience for editing.
  • Experience using SolidWorks, FreeCAD, Fusion 360, Autodesk Inventor, or a comparable platform.
  • At least ten years of experience creating complex assemblies.
  • Practical GD&T experience under ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard.
  • Experience supporting at least two manufacturing methods, including injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, or casting and forging.
  • Current involvement in mechanical or industrial CAD modeling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation.
  • Ability to assess dimensional accuracy and production readiness.

Helpful Background

Additional experience can help you contribute to more complex modeling and evaluation workflows, particularly where physical products must be reconstructed or CAD production processes streamlined.

  • Reverse engineering, including scan-to-CAD or point-cloud conversion.
  • Assembly-level modeling.
  • CAD workflow automation using Python, iLogic, VBA, or similar scripting tools.
