About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. It helps specialists discover projects, build a professional profile, and apply their expertise to work that shapes how modern AI systems are developed.

As an OpenTrain AI contractor, you will contribute specialized engineering judgment to structured training data while building experience in a fast-growing area of technology.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Contributors prepare, review, and evaluate examples so AI systems can learn to produce more accurate and useful results.

This role applies mechanical design expertise to CAD data. Your models, reviews, and documentation will help create reliable examples for AI training while allowing you to work remotely with a flexible part-time schedule.

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Parametric CAD Modeling AI Training Specialist to create and review parametric mechanical CAD models as structured input for AI training. You will work primarily with FreeCAD while drawing on experience with SolidWorks or comparable platforms.

The work focuses on producing reliable parts and assemblies that preserve design intent, constraints, feature logic, dimensional accuracy, and manufacturing considerations.

  • Remote contractor opportunity
  • Approximately 15–20 hours per week; the listing also indicates a 20+ hour weekly time requirement
  • Hourly pay range of $40–$100 USD
  • Worldwide opportunity
  • English-language work

What You'll Do

You will translate written engineering briefs into organized, technically sound CAD data. You will also review existing models, explain your decisions, and assess whether designs are ready for practical production.

  • Create fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies from written briefs.
  • Edit and update existing parametric models to meet technical requirements.
  • Document model changes clearly.
  • Review dimensional accuracy, tolerance application, constraint quality, and feature-tree structure.
  • Assess manufacturability and apply design-for-manufacturing principles.
  • Support modeling across injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting or forging.
  • Translate engineering requirements into organized CAD data suitable for AI model training.
  • Communicate modeling decisions and updates through clear written reports and verbal updates.

Required Qualifications

You should have at least four years of hands-on parametric CAD experience. The listing is categorized as entry level, but the technical requirements call for substantial practical experience with mechanical CAD modeling.

  • Experience with SolidWorks, FreeCAD, Fusion 360, Autodesk Inventor, or a comparable parametric CAD platform.
  • Experience creating complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Practical GD&T knowledge using ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard.
  • Ability to assess dimensions, tolerances, constraints, feature structure, and production readiness.
  • Experience applying design-for-manufacturing principles across at least two manufacturing processes.
  • Current mechanical or industrial CAD modeling experience.
  • Strong technical documentation skills.

Valued Additional Experience

The following background is valuable for this role and may help you contribute to more complex modeling and review tasks.

  • Professional experience using FreeCAD.
  • Assembly-level modeling.
  • Reverse engineering, including scan-to-CAD or point-cloud conversion.
  • CAD workflow automation using Python, iLogic, VBA, or related scripting tools.

Why Join This Work

AI training is a growing field where specialists help shape the behavior and capabilities of modern AI systems. Your mechanical design knowledge can be applied beyond traditional CAD work by helping train models to understand structured engineering data and practical manufacturing considerations.

Remote, flexible contractor projects can fit around other professional commitments while giving you a way to build a portfolio of work at the intersection of engineering and AI.

  • Apply real-world mechanical design expertise to cutting-edge AI training.
  • Work remotely with a part-time contractor schedule.
  • Use your CAD and manufacturing knowledge in structured evaluation and data creation.
  • Build an OpenTrain profile that reflects specialized AI training experience.
