About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Specialists review examples, assess quality, and provide structured feedback that helps AI systems learn how to produce more accurate and useful results.

This project applies that process to mechanical CAD. Your engineering judgment will help evaluate models, drawings, design decisions, and manufacturing considerations for AI-training workflows.

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Parametric CAD Design and Review Specialist for remote contractor work. You will create, revise, and assess parametric mechanical CAD models, develop robust assembly-level designs, and document design decisions, edits, audits, and identified issues.

The role requires advanced Autodesk Inventor or comparable CAD expertise, practical mechanical design judgment, and the ability to communicate precise technical feedback. Prior AI experience is not required when you bring relevant mechanical design expertise.

  • Work remotely as a part-time contractor
  • Support AI training through CAD design, review, and structured technical feedback
  • Use Autodesk Inventor or a comparable parametric CAD platform

What You'll Do

You will work from detailed written briefs and review existing designs with attention to technical accuracy, parametric integrity, manufacturing feasibility, and clear documentation.

  • Develop fully parametric 3D CAD models of mechanical parts and assemblies
  • Edit existing models while preserving their parametric structure and applying sound modeling practices
  • Review CAD models and technical drawings for dimensional accuracy, tolerances, production readiness, and manufacturability
  • Apply ASME Y14.5 or equivalent GD&T standards
  • Use Design for Manufacturability principles for injection molding, sheet metal, CNC machining, and casting or forging
  • Document design rationale, revisions, audit findings, identified issues, and practical feedback
  • Use reverse-engineering approaches such as scan-to-CAD or point-cloud-to-model reconstruction when appropriate

Required Qualifications

This opportunity is intended for contributors with substantial hands-on mechanical CAD experience. The source requirements distinguish between edit-level work and complex model creation: at least four years of parametric modeling experience is required for edit-level work, or at least 10 years for complex model creation.

  • Advanced parametric Autodesk Inventor or comparable CAD modeling skills
  • Experience designing mechanical parts and assemblies at the assembly level
  • Practical GD&T knowledge under ASME Y14.5 or an equivalent standard
  • Design for Manufacturability experience across at least two manufacturing processes
  • Ability to manage complex assembly-level designs
  • Ability to communicate precise technical feedback and explain engineering decisions clearly

Helpful Experience

The following experience can strengthen your fit, particularly for automation and reverse-engineering assignments:

  • FreeCAD, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360
  • CAD automation and scripting
  • Python, iLogic, VBA, or NX Open
  • Reverse engineering, scan-to-CAD, or point-cloud reconstruction

Schedule, Location, and Compensation

This is worldwide remote contractor work. The role description requests availability of at least 15 to 20 hours per week, while the structured listing indicates 20+ hours per week; confirm the exact schedule for an assignment before accepting it. A fixed project duration is not specified.

The listed hourly compensation range is $30-$100 USD per hour. The role description also refers to task-based payment, so compensation terms should be confirmed before accepting an assignment.

  • Remote and worldwide
  • Contractor and part-time
  • English-language work
  • Listed compensation: $30-$100 USD per hour
  • Availability indicated as 15-20 hours or more per week, depending on the assignment

Why Join AI Training
