The Music and Audio Annotation Expert Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Music and Audio Annotation Expert to analyze 30- to 90-second field recordings. You will use quality headphones to identify musical characteristics, background sounds, recording context, and timed sound events in a web-based annotation platform.

The role is listed as entry level, but it requires at least three years of hands-on music or audio experience. The engagement is remote, requires 20-25 hours per week, and pays $30-$45 per hour.

What You'll Do

You will listen closely to noisy, real-world recordings and capture precise information using dropdowns, timestamps, and concise structured notes. Your observations should be grounded in what you can hear and written clearly in English.

In later phases, you will review AI-generated descriptions of audio clips and classify details as correct, incorrect, or invented, adding brief explanations for your decisions.

• Identify audible instruments in busy or noisy mixes
• Estimate tempo within a few beats per minute
• Identify musical key using relative pitch and a reference when needed
• Recognize background sounds, crowd reactions, and other scene details
• Add timestamps for traffic, sirens, applause, and other audible events
• Compare paired recordings of the same song from different locations
• Judge which characteristics remain consistent and which change
• Evaluate AI-generated audio descriptions for accuracy and invented details
• Write concise, evidence-based explanations

Required Qualifications and Setup

You should have substantial practical experience with music or audio and be comfortable making consistent judgments during repetitive, detail-oriented annotation work. The role also requires a quiet environment and equipment suitable for careful listening.
