About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help contributors find and grow opportunities in one place, build a unified portfolio, and apply quickly to work that fits their skills and schedule.

OpenTrain AI is the hiring organization for this role. Creating an OpenTrain account is free and gives you access to projects, workflows, and feedback that help you grow as an AI training professional.

Why AI training matters

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building intelligence: people create, check, and rate examples that teach models how to behave. This work is remote-friendly, often flexible, and lets you have direct impact on how real-world systems understand scientific content.

  • Work remotely from anywhere with a computer and internet connection.
  • Flexible, part‑time contracting lets you fit work around other commitments.
  • Contribute subject‑matter expertise that shapes model accuracy and safety.

The role

We are hiring a Microbiology AI Training Expert to review, analyze, and document microbiology content to support RLHF and evaluation-rating workflows. You will apply scientific judgment to assess microbial structure, physiology, responses to agents, and disease relationships, and record findings for model training.

This is a contract, part‑time role requiring 20+ hours per week. Work is fully remote and paid hourly at $70–$90 USD per hour, depending on experience.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part‑time
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours/week
  • Data type: Document review; Label types: RLHF, evaluation/rating
  • Pay: $70–$90 USD per hour

What you'll do

  • Review and analyze development, morphology, and behavior of bacteria, fungi, and algae in source documents.
  • Evaluate microbial responses to antibiotics and other agents using established rubrics and criteria.
  • Document findings clearly and consistently to produce high‑quality training data.
  • Apply evaluation rubrics to rate scientific accuracy and relevance for model feedback.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to maintain scientific rigor and data integrity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of bacterial, fungal, and algal systems, including structure and physiology.
  • Ability to evaluate microbial behavior, disease relationships, and responses to treatments.
  • Strong written and verbal scientific communication skills for clear documentation.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to scientific accuracy while working independently and remotely.

Helpful background

You do not need prior annotation experience to apply, but the following will make you competitive and productive from day one.

  • Experience creating or applying rubrics in scientific, educational, or QA contexts.
  • Prior work with AI, machine learning, or annotation projects related to biology or microbiology.
  • Advanced degrees (MS/PhD) or laboratory research experience in microbiology or related fields.

How the work is organized

Tasks are delivered through OpenTrain workflows tailored to document review, RLHF prompts, and evaluation rating. You will receive training materials, rubrics, and examples to standardize judgments and ensure data quality.

As a contractor you manage your hours within project needs; most contributors complete blocks of work on a flexible schedule. Payment is hourly at the stated range and handled through OpenTrain's contracting process.

  • Work remotely and report progress through OpenTrain project tools.
  • Expect initial training and rubric examples before independent labeling.
  • OpenTrain provides feedback and quality checks to support fair, consistent evaluations.
