Use your metallurgy and welding inspection expertise to review microstructures, welds, coatings, heat treatments, and additive manufacturing builds for AI training. This remote contract pays $80 to $130 per hour.
The Work
You will evaluate technical materials and inspection decisions used to train AI systems for advanced manufacturing and materials engineering. Your work will combine professional inspection judgment with clear written and verbal explanations.
You will apply standards-based reasoning to metal samples, weldments, coatings, heat treatment results, and laser powder bed fusion builds.
- Evaluate metallographic microstructures and decide whether materials are acceptable and conforming.
- Analyze heat treatment processes and acceptance evidence using AMS 2750, ASTM E112, and related US specifications.
- Assess weld quality through macro etch evaluation and apply Certified Welding Inspector acceptance criteria to case studies.
- Review coating inspection evidence against NACE/AMPP and SSPC protocols.
- Identify and disposition defects in laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing builds using build and cross-sectional data.
- Document accept or reject decisions with clear written and verbal explanations.
- Apply NADCAP, AWS, ASTM, and AMS standards across samples, weldments, coatings, and additive manufacturing builds.
What It Pays and Takes
This is a remote, part-time contractor role for professionals who can make careful, standards-based technical decisions. No prior AI experience is required, but strong hands-on expertise in the listed inspection areas is required.
- Pay: $80 to $130 per hour.
- Time: 20 or more hours per week.
- Location: Remote; US-based professionals are preferred, and applicants must be based in the US.
- Language: English.
- Experience: At least eight years making accept or reject decisions involving micrographs, weld macros, fracture surfaces, coatings, or laser powder bed fusion additive builds.
- Required knowledge: ASTM, AMS, AWS, NADCAP, NACE/AMPP, and SSPC standards.
- Required expertise: Metallographic analysis, heat treatment evaluation, weld inspection, and industrial coating assessment.
- Required skills: Technical writing, verbal communication, attention to detail, and the ability to explain inspection reasoning clearly.
- Helpful background: Current or prior AWS Certified Welding Inspector credentials or an equivalent metallurgical certification.
- Also useful: Knowledge of laser powder bed fusion processes and defect mechanisms, plus experience collaborating digitally and managing deliverables independently.
