OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling, helping contributors discover projects, build a professional profile, and apply in minutes.

In this role, your engineering judgment will shape how AI systems are evaluated in complex enterprise product design and manufacturing environments.

  • Remote contract work available worldwide
  • English-language role
  • Part-time contractor position with a default schedule of 40 hours per week
  • Commitment of 20+ hours per week
  • Rate of $70-$80 per hour

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human work behind modern artificial intelligence. Specialists create examples, review model outputs, and develop evaluation criteria that help AI systems produce more accurate and useful results.

As a mechanical engineering expert, you will contribute advanced technical knowledge to scenarios, reference materials, and rubrics that distinguish authentic engineering reasoning from generic recall.

  • Work directly on cutting-edge AI evaluation
  • Apply professional expertise to realistic technical scenarios
  • Help shape how AI handles engineering design and manufacturing workflows

The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Mechanical Engineering AI Task Designer to create evaluation tasks for AI systems working in enterprise product design and manufacturing contexts. You will translate senior mechanical engineering judgment into realistic scenarios, reference outputs, technical narratives, and rubrics across complex design, analysis, manufacturing, reliability, and certification workflows.

The work supports both ASME-based United States standards and ISO-based international standards. Experts in either standards track are welcome.

  • Subject matter focus: Enterprise Mechanical Engineering Evaluation
  • Create tasks for design, analysis, manufacturing, reliability, and certification workflows
  • Develop evaluation materials that measure engineering judgment and decision-making

What You'll Do

You will construct technically credible scenarios covering complex product design cycles, cross-functional design reviews, manufacturing processes, and regulatory certification. Your deliverables will include reference design specifications, engineering analyses, executive-level technical narratives, and evaluation rubrics.

Tasks may involve enterprise engineering tools and methods used across product development, analysis, manufacturing, and quality workflows.

  • Build scenarios involving CAD modeling, thermal and fluid systems analysis, structural and stress analysis, manufacturing process engineering, and reliability or failure analysis
  • Develop scenarios using tools such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, MATLAB or Simulink, Siemens Teamcenter, and PTC Windchill
  • Apply FEA or CFD, DFM or DFA, Six Sigma or DFSS, and GD&T practices
  • Work with ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS practices
  • Produce reference design specifications and engineering analyses
  • Write executive-level technical narratives and evaluation rubrics
  • Distinguish authentic engineering judgment from generic technical recall

Required Qualifications

At least five years of experience as a mechanical engineer or engineering lead is required. Your background should include direct ownership of large-scale product designs, manufacturing processes, or engineering certification programs.

Candidates should bring practical experience across product design, manufacturing, analysis, reliability, and certification tradeoffs, along with strong knowledge of enterprise mechanical engineering tools, methodologies, safety standards, regulatory certification, and cross-functional design governance.

  • Senior mechanical engineering experience in a major industrial, automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, or Fortune 500 environment
  • Ability to develop realistic product design, manufacturing, reliability, and certification scenarios
  • Practical fluency with CAD, FEA or CFD, DFM or DFA, Six Sigma or DFSS, and GD&T
  • Working knowledge of ASME or ISO standards
  • Understanding of cross-functional engineering governance
  • Experience producing engineering analyses, reference specifications, technical narratives, or evaluation rubrics

Helpful Background

Professional credentials and experience creating structured technical learning or evaluation materials can strengthen your application.

  • United States Professional Engineer license
  • International equivalent such as CEng or EUR ING
  • Experience writing evaluation rubrics
  • Experience developing engineering training curricula
  • Experience creating reference designs or formal design documentation
