About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help engineers and technical specialists discover projects, build a unified AI-training portfolio, and grow freelance careers in a fast‑moving industry.

Creating an OpenTrain account is free — the platform connects contributors with paid, remote work designing and evaluating the examples that teach modern AI systems.

  • Platform focus: career-building for AI training and data-labeling contributors.
  • Work is remote, contract-based, and suited to flexible schedules.

About AI Training Work

AI training (data labeling / human feedback) is the human side of building AI: people prepare examples, draft reference outputs, and judge model behavior so systems learn correct, safe, and useful responses.

This role sits at the intersection of senior mechanical engineering judgment and generative AI evaluation: you will convert domain expertise into scenarios, rubrics, and reference outputs that meaningfully test AI systems used in product design and manufacturing.

  • Work influences how state-of-the-art AI handles engineering decisions and safety-critical tradeoffs.
  • Typical perks: fully remote work, flexible hours, and direct payment for specialist knowledge.

The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Mechanical Engineering AI Evaluation Expert to build enterprise-grade evaluation scenarios, reference outputs, and rubrics for AI systems that must handle complex design, safety, and manufacturing judgments.

This is a contract, part-time role: expect 20+ hours/week, paid hourly at USD $70–$80/hour. The project accepts worldwide contributors who are fluent in English.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Compensation: PAY_PER_HOUR, USD 70–80 / hour.
  • Workload: 20+ hours per week; remote and worldwide; English required.

What You'll Do

Convert your enterprise mechanical engineering experience into evaluation artifacts that teach and test AI systems. Tasks focus on realism, traceability, and standards-based engineering judgment.

  • Build enterprise mechanical engineering scenarios covering product design, manufacturing, and certification workflows.
  • Draft reference outputs and rubrics that reflect senior engineering judgment and executive-level technical narratives.
  • Create tasks that involve CAD modeling, thermal and fluid analysis, structural and stress analysis, and failure/reliability assessments.
  • Design scenarios that incorporate SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, MATLAB/Simulink, Teamcenter, and Windchill where appropriate.
  • Write standards-based tasks using FEA, CFD, DFM, DFA, Six Sigma, DFSS, and GD&T.
  • Evaluate and rate AI-generated technical responses and produce clear, actionable feedback.

Requirements

The role requires deep, hands-on mechanical engineering experience in enterprise settings and proven ability to own designs, manufacturing, or certification programs at scale.

  • Senior mechanical engineering experience in industrial, automotive, aerospace, or manufacturing environments.
  • Direct ownership of product designs, manufacturing processes, or certification programs at enterprise scale.
  • Fluency with enterprise engineering tools and methods, including simulation and PLM workflows (SolidWorks, ANSYS, CATIA, MATLAB/Simulink, Teamcenter, Windchill).
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and regulatory certification such as ISO, FAA, or FDA.
  • Practical knowledge of FEA, CFD, DFM, DFA, Six Sigma, DFSS, and GD&T.
  • Experience writing rubrics, technical documentation, or engineering training materials.
  • Structured-field experience level: Entry level (see role description — this project expects senior, enterprise-level engineering judgment).

Who Should Apply

Apply if you are an experienced mechanical engineer or engineering lead comfortable translating complex engineering problems into clear evaluation tasks and reference answers.

This role is best for contributors who have worked in large enterprise environments, participated in cross-functional design governance, and communicated technical decisions to executives and certification bodies.

  • Mechanical engineers with enterprise product, manufacturing, or certification ownership.
  • Leads or senior engineers who have produced design specifications, FEA/CFD reports, or failure analyses.
  • Engineers experienced in writing training materials, review rubrics, or standards-based technical tasks.

How It Works

To apply, create a free OpenTrain account, complete your profile detailing relevant engineering experience, and submit your application through the platform. OpenTrain connects you to projects and handles contracting and payment.

If selected, you'll work remotely as a contractor on part-time assignments. Tasks typically involve drafting scenarios and rubrics, preparing reference outputs, and rating AI responses according to the standards you help define.

  • Create a free OpenTrain account and complete your profile.
  • Apply to the role and provide examples of enterprise engineering work and documentation.
  • Work remotely, on a contract basis, at USD $70–$80/hour for 20+ hours/week.
