About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect contributors with opportunities to apply real-world expertise to the development of advanced AI systems, build a professional profile, and grow their careers in this fast-moving field.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Experts review examples, evaluate model outputs, and provide precise feedback that helps AI systems become more accurate and useful. In engineering-focused projects, your professional judgment can help shape how AI interprets designs, specifications, and technical documentation.

  • Remote work that can fit around your existing schedule
  • A chance to apply specialized engineering knowledge to cutting-edge AI development
  • No prior AI training experience required

The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking a Mechanical Engineer AI Trainer for remote, part-time contract work. You will produce 3D CAD models, interpret technical drawings, document engineering requirements, and provide expert written and verbal feedback to train and validate AI systems for mechanical engineering applications.

This opportunity is expected to require less than 20 hours per week. Compensation ranges from $55 to $100 per hour, depending on the work performed.

  • Employment type: Contractor, part-time
  • Work arrangement: Remote, worldwide
  • Language: English
  • Pay: $55–$100 per hour

What You'll Do

You will combine practical mechanical design experience with careful evaluation and documentation. The work involves creating accurate technical artifacts and explaining engineering decisions clearly so AI systems can learn from high-quality examples and expert feedback.

  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models of simple mechanical components using SolidWorks, NX, Creo, or CATIA.
  • Interpret and analyze technical drawings, including critical dimensions, tolerances, and specifications.
  • Document component requirements, technical specifications, and manufacturing tolerances.
  • Contribute insights and feedback on stress analysis and finite element analysis tasks to support model validation.
  • Review and improve technical documentation and CAD outputs for accuracy.
  • Provide written and verbal feedback to train and validate AI system outputs in mechanical engineering.
  • Collaborate asynchronously with cross-functional teams through remote communication tools.

Requirements

This role requires substantial hands-on mechanical design experience and strong technical communication. Although prior AI training experience is not required, you should be comfortable applying your engineering judgment to CAD models, drawings, documentation, stress analysis, and validation tasks.

  • 5+ years of hands-on mechanical design engineering experience focused on 3D CAD modeling and FEA
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, NX, Creo, or CATIA; expertise across multiple platforms is strongly preferred
  • Ability to interpret and produce comprehensive technical drawings and documentation
  • Deep conceptual understanding of stress analysis, FEA principles, and engineering validation processes
  • Experience modeling components, interpreting drawings, and defining requirements as a design engineer
  • Knowledge of end-to-end engineering processes from requirements definition through validation and documentation
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and meticulous attention to detail

Who Should Apply

This opportunity is well suited to experienced mechanical design engineers who want to use their domain expertise in AI development. Your ability to reason about components, tolerances, CAD outputs, and engineering validation is more important than previous experience working on AI projects.

  • Mechanical engineers with professional CAD modeling experience
  • Design engineers familiar with technical drawings and manufacturing tolerances
  • Engineers who understand stress analysis, FEA, and validation workflows
  • Detail-oriented professionals who can provide clear written and verbal feedback

How the Engagement Works

You can contribute remotely for less than 20 hours per week as an independent contractor. A minimum task submission per week applies. OpenTrain helps you discover and build opportunities in AI training while you apply your expertise to practical model-training work.

  • Flexible, part-time schedule
