The role

OpenTrain is hiring a Mechanical Design / CAD AI Training Expert to contribute domain expertise to an engineering-focused AI training project. You will provide high-quality, real-world input so models learn accurate mechanical design, CAD, and manufacturing practices.

This is a contractor, part-time role (less than 20 hours per week). Pay is hourly, with a range of $66–$130 USD/hour and a top rate of $130/hr. Work is worldwide and performed in English.

What you'll do

Your domain expertise will be used to evaluate documents, rate model outputs, and generate explanatory text that helps the model learn engineering best practices. Tasks are document-centered and include both rating and text-generation work.

• Provide detailed input on mechanical design solutions, including component and assembly modeling using advanced CAD tools.
• Evaluate and critique engineering drawings for accuracy, manufacturability, and adherence to GD&T standards.
• Assess and recommend design for manufacturability (DFM) and tolerance analysis practices.
• Contribute insights on engineering mechanics, tribology, and geometric modeling challenges.
• Review and enhance graphics and geometric modeling representations for mechanical assemblies and systems.
• Offer guidance on manufacturing engineering best practices and simulate realistic design scenarios.
• Create written and verbal explanations of mechanical engineering concepts to inform model training.

Requirements

We need proven mechanical design and CAD skills — this project values domain expertise above prior AI experience. All listed requirements come from the role brief and must be met.

• BS or MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (required).
• Substantial experience in production design, including hands-on use of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and DFM principles.
• Proficiency with industry CAD platforms such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or NX and demonstrated 3D modeling expertise.
• Strong understanding of tribology, engineering mechanics, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
• Experience in manufacturing engineering and end-to-end product development.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to clearly convey technical concepts.

Helpful but optional

The project also values recognized CAD certifications and advanced workflow experience, but these are not strict requirements.

• CSWP or CSWE certification is a plus, reflecting advanced proficiency in CAD and design workflows.
