The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a Materials Science AI Evaluation Expert to support AI training focused on materials science. You will review AI-generated explanations and create reference content that demonstrates accurate scientific reasoning, clear terminology, sound engineering judgment, and practical interpretation.

The work spans metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, nanomaterials, processing, phase diagrams, and characterization. The listed experience level is entry level, while the role requires substantial relevant education or professional experience in the field.

What You'll Do

You will create and assess technical text used to teach AI how materials scientists and engineers reason about structure, processing, properties, performance, and failure. Reviews should apply consistent criteria and communicate detailed judgments in writing.

  • Create prompts, reference answers, rewrites, and corrective feedback about materials science
  • Evaluate and compare model responses for scientific correctness and engineering logic
  • Check clarity, unit consistency, physical plausibility, and adherence to the requested task
  • Identify unsupported material properties and misleading processing or performance claims
  • Detect flawed phase diagrams and incorrect microstructure reasoning
  • Flag unsafe recommendations
  • Apply consistent review criteria across technical content
  • Communicate detailed evaluations and reasoning in written form

Technical Evaluation Focus

The role requires careful assessment of calculations, diagrams, experimental interpretations, units, terminology, assumptions, and design tradeoffs. You will evaluate whether technical claims are supported by sound materials science and whether proposed explanations match real engineering behavior.

  • Diagnose microstructure and toughness issues in heat-treated steels
  • Explain precipitation hardening and overaging in aluminum alloys
  • Evaluate polymer, ceramic, and composite failure mechanisms
  • Verify units, characterization methods, engineering assumptions, and materials-claim plausibility

Requirements

Applicants should have a bachelor's degree or higher in materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, metallurgy, polymer science, nanotechnology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

At least three years of relevant experience is required. Relevant backgrounds may include research, engineering, laboratory work, manufacturing, teaching, technical writing, academic review, or related scientific work. Experience with scientific quality assurance, engineering review, technical content review, or rubric-based evaluation is preferred.

  • Deep knowledge of structure-property relationships and crystal structures
  • Strong understanding of phase diagrams, mechanical behavior, and heat treatment
  • Knowledge of polymers, ceramics, metals, composites, corrosion, and characterization techniques
  • Strong English communication skills
  • Careful attention to detail
  • Ability to assess calculations, diagrams, experimental interpretations, units, terminology, assumptions, and design tradeoffs
