The Role
OpenTrain AI is seeking a Materials Science Expert contractor to evaluate and solve advanced materials science and engineering problems. You will assess AI-generated technical responses for correctness, accuracy, and engineering quality while applying practical judgment to real-world and theoretical scenarios.
The project is remote, requires professional English proficiency, and is expected to run for 3 to 6 months. Candidates must be based in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, or India.

What You'll Do
You will contribute expert evaluation and clear explanations across materials selection, failure analysis, testing, and process development. Your feedback will help refine AI reasoning in materials science and engineering.
- Evaluate and solve advanced materials science and engineering problems.
- Review AI-generated technical responses for correctness, accuracy, and engineering quality.
- Apply engineering judgment to materials selection, failure scenarios, and theoretical questions.
- Analyze materials issues using microstructural analysis, fractography, tensile testing, fatigue testing, and hardness testing.
- Use thermodynamic and kinetic modeling to troubleshoot materials problems.
- Apply expertise in materials science and engineering to inform model improvements.
- Document feedback and provide clear written and verbal explanations.
- Collaborate remotely with a distributed team of experts and project participants.
Required Qualifications
This is an expert-level opportunity for candidates with substantial academic and hands-on materials experience. You should be able to evaluate technical reasoning rigorously, explain root causes clearly, and connect material behavior to test data and processing conditions.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering with a materials specialization.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in materials selection, failure analysis, testing, or process development.
- Expert knowledge of metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites.
- Strong understanding of microstructure-property relationships and degradation or failure mechanisms.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze root-cause failures using fractography, metallography, and mechanical or thermal test data.
- Familiarity with ASTM, ASM, and ISO materials standards and process qualification requirements.
- Professional and fluent English proficiency.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Experience and Recognition
Experience with materials characterization equipment or process development in a manufacturing environment is a plus. The role also strongly prefers evidence of rigor in authoring or evaluating challenging technical problems.
- Experience with SEM, XRD, TEM, DSC, or TGA equipment.
- Process development experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Service on an olympiad problem committee.
- Author credit for a textbook problem set or solutions manual.
- Item-writer experience for an NCEES or academic qualifying-exam committee.
- Service on an ASTM, ASM, or ISO materials standards committee.
- Top placement or team-lead experience in the TMS Materials Bowl, ASM International undergraduate design competition, or an MRS student award.
- Best-paper award at TMS Annual Meeting, MS&T, or MRS.
- Publication in Acta Materialia or Nature Materials.
- Acta Materialia Silver Medal.
- Early-career fellowship or grant such as NSF CAREER, DOE Early Career, or Sloan Fellowship.
- TMS Young Leader or MRS Outstanding Young Investigator recognition.
